Scene file reference point for various settings?

Hi folks have been reading a few of the scene files that various users are using and am keen to experiment on my AF102, however has I am relatively new to Panasonic, was wondering if there is any better point of reference better than the way that the manual skims over the individual scene file settings (Eg. what is 'Coring' exactly?).

Also, I noticed one of the constant methods is to reduce resolution, however I thought that this camcorder did this much better than the DSLRs...is this still necessary?
