Scene file and workflow question

Okay, I started playing around with all the sample scene files Barry provided with his HVX/HPX book and it says, 'To get the full effect of these scene files, set the camera in manual white balance mode and use the auto iris feature.'

I'd like to confirm if the following workflow is okay to use while still preserving the effects of the custom scene files:

1) Select desired scene using scene dial
2) Manually white balance the scene (preferably with a gray card)
3) Put camera in Auto Iris mode by pressing the IRIS button appropriately and wait for camera to adjust exposure
4) Press IRIS button again to lock exposure setting

Basically, I'm wondering if the camera needs to be left in the Auto IRIS mode or it's okay to lock the exposure in. I'm assuming the latter should be done otherwise unwanted exposure changes may occur during filming. Also, it should be okay to fine-tune the exposure manually after locking it, correct?

Thanks!

No, you've got it, your step-by-step is the way you should work with it. I would never want someone to leave the camera always in auto-iris mode; you just use auto-iris to set the exposure at the beginning of the shot (and then adjust to taste).

Perfect, that's what I figured. Thanks a bunch Barry! The ability to store and load different scene files with the HVX/HPX is a fantastic feature.

Now I just wish you could have more than four of them available from the menu. As it now stands, I've got seven scene files and the only way to swap them around is to stick the SD card into a computer and change the file names to one of the four allowed and then reload them in the HPX :-( I'm assuming there's no other way, correct?

Is there a firmware update wish list going yet? :-)

Well, you do know that each file on that card contains six scene files, right? I'm assuming you do know this, but just in case you didn't, each scene file you've saved is a "package" of six and so you really have 24 selectable scene files (six in each file, four files).

Other than that, yeah, have two SD cards, one with 1-4 and the other with 5-7 (named 1-3, of course).

Yep, knew that. Good idea on the multiple SD cards though; doh! <insert feeling foolish> They're certainly cheap enough these days :dankk2:

Still, it would be great to fill up one SD card up with as many scene files as it could hold. Even a 'small' 8MB card could hold literally thousands of scene files...
