scene file advice

I will be shooting a music clip. It is a kind of modern version of a "three degrees" act. It is on stage, with lighting and there will be an audio man mixing the whole act. Which scene file (which are standard on the 301 since i did not have time yet to download other ones) is most suitable? Which codec suits best 720/50p or 1028/25p considering they will do some dancing as well ?

Hi Cees,

i would definetly prefer 720/50p. Its just better for fast movement stuff like music video with dancers etc...

As a standard scene-file maybe one of the cinema-files (5,6) isnt bad.

If you want do some colour-correction etc. in postproduction, maybe the B-STR (4) isnt bad, because it has a good dynamic range and neutral colours...

Good Shoot and fun!

Thanks for you advice. I heard also that B-str gives the least noise in low light conditions so maybe your advoce for scenefile 4 seems good.

I have done about 7 one day shoots since I got a 300 about 8 weeks ago, some run and gun, some high production values. When I flip through the scene files for a client to choose on my HD Panasonic field monitor BT-LH900, they will 100% of the time choose the VIVID setting. Clients like the warmer flesh tones, so I have made that my "default" setting.

vivid

vivid

I agree with Ned. I almost always use the "vivid" profile, and I have received alot of compliments from the editors on this profile.

I did a shoot recently where my camera was the "B" camera alongside three HDX900's, and the editor told me the footage from my HPX-300 looked better to his eyes than the HDX900 footage. I'm not trying to say the HPX300 is a better camera than the HDX900, but it just goes to show how good the "vivid" picture profile looks.

I have been having some great results shooting 720/60P with dancing. The clarity is very sharp and crisp. Shooting 1080/59.94i also gives good results that is great for broadcast.

When shooting the format is determined by what the final medium is. If it is only going to be Network cable then I always shoot 60i. DVD releases only such as a Indie film I always shoot Progressive 30p or 60p depending on the scene. I seldom shoot 24p these days.

Enjoy....

Untill now I shot in cinelike V with the master ped at -15 and DSR at 1. If I look at the lcd the image is very sharp but if I play back the same shot after recording on the lcd is looks soft. Is this normal for this scenefile? Do I need to increase the "detail level" next time?

I think its a general problem with the LCD... In my cam everything looks soft during playback....

I just did a feature film drama on scene file 5 and it is lovely for the 25np look we wanted.

As also said the playback on the LCD is soft but all is OK when it goes to final cut, I presume the playback is SD quality or it is degraded to proxy levels.
