Scary Moments While Shooting

I had a scary moment while shooting the other day. My buddy was interviewing some people and I had my wireless mic on him. We then moved outside for a shot and he bagan to run and jump. Next thing I know it fell to the ground and dragged for about 5 feet before he realize it and picked it up. I was scared shitless cuz wireless isn't cheap. Fortunatly the wireless transmitter was still ok. Hardly even a mark. I'd like to give props to sennheiser for making some damn good/strong wireless packs.

Also while shooting another video I was sitting in the window of a van shooting over the windsheild/hood for a shot...we were moving about 40km/h and my buddy was supposed to throw the doll into the center of the van...but hit me instead...needless to say I nearly fell out of the van and hit a basketball net...with a GL-2 in my hand...but all was well and the driver didn't make any dirastic moveswith the van so I didn't fall.

Has anyone else ever had something like that...or other scary moments happen? I thought we could share ware stories from the set. lol.

Scary stuff there with the van! Sounds dangerous! Always make sure you are properly strapped in, wearing a helmet, and all that other saftey stuff!

Good to hear your radio Mic is ok. I was crewing a performance of "The King And I" and a dancer was spinning prety fast as part of her dance. To our horror we see her radio mic transmitter-pack unhook and go shooting out untill caught by the mic cable. It spun with her on the end of the cable about 2 feet out at full speed for a good 2 or 3 rotations picking up speed before she passed by the stage wall... WHACK!
...You could feel the crew collectivly groan in pain before moment of silence on Com untill the Audio Mixer spoke up and informed that it was still working.

I was shooting a short with my two buddies. I was lying down on the ground shooting upwards at one friend who had a shovel and was supposed to hit "next" to my other friend on the ground. Well, on the way down of a full overhead swing he freaked that he was getting to close to my camera and nailed the guy on the ground right in the head with the shovel. He was okay so it was HILARIOUS ...and we got it on tape.

haha the first one there...so you do work in the theatre as well? I have many of stories from the booth aswell...maybe we should open it up to that too!

We had a performance of Footloose and the first night the one actor came out for curtain call and hit the mic that was on the stand. I talked to him afterwards and the next night...did it again. So I told him to be carefully...cuz I when a mic hits the ground...it makes alot of noise if the sound op. isn't on the ball. Low and behold...the 3rd and final night...he hit the mic. Sometime thoes actors are just SO impossible! (sorry to all the actors on this forum...tho they'd be more like Tactors (Tech actors) lol.

Also when wrong sound fx are played it can be fairly funny...instead of a phone call.....a police siren. lol.

I was shooting for a college on the south side of Chicago. It was the end of the day and I was loading up the van when I heard fireworks nearby. They weren't fireworks. Needless to say, I was ready to go home at that point.

As to gunshots:
We had a wedding where the individual bottles of high priced alcohol outnumbered the guests. Not to be outdone, they all applied themselves to the booze with gusto.

So, later in the evening we were packing up some gear and all of a sudden heard gunshots. There was the groom, without his shirt, in his tux slacks, jacket, cowboy hat and boots, firing a pistol into the air crazily.

We left.

As to equipment scares:
My brother was running my big cam a while back and cut the corner around a cement column a little short at a dead run and just about laid him on his backside. The crack of the lense hitting the concrete was pretty nasty, but everything was ok.

A while back I was shooting handheld with the DSR-500. I noticed that the lens seemed loose and I reached up to check the mount to tighten it when the whole assembly came apart and I now had a very heavy camera+lense flailing about. I ended up keeping the body from cracking the cement by holding the body with one hand while the lense hung from the cable. Stripped the cable out and i had to shoot entirely manual (NO servo controls) for the rest of the evening. Cheap and easy fix.

Other than that, assorted DVX drops and one fell over and cracked the XLR assembly and screwed up the zoom. Cost about $800 to fix it.

The first night of shooting 12 o' clock street kings we had a few cameras out and one of the guys was in the middle of the street shooting from the ground. A guy was doing a wheelie sitting on the handle bars and he drifted over to the center lane and plastered the guy shooting. I felt bad because i said hey, you should get some shots from the street right before that happened. We caught the accident on the slomo cam and man, i dont know how that dude is alive. He spun like a rag doll and the bike blew a part like it hit a wall.

My scares....
One night as a news photog at our local ABC affiliate, I was sent to cover a shooting in the not so nice part of town. As I got out of my news car, I heard a gun battle with bullets whizzing by just across the way from me. I dove back in the car, called the station and said that I would not get back out until I had a police escort down to the crime scene.

I was shooting an event - I had a light attached to the HVX hotshoe, tethered by a 4pin cable to my battery belt. The camera was on the table, I was sitting in the chair - i forgot to disconnect the belt from the camera - 2 little kids out of nowhere came running by, snagged the cable, I saw the HVX slide violently across the plastic, it flew off the table but my wiked instincts caught it before it smashed onto the cold concrete..
