Scammer on DVXUser

Hey all. I recently agreed to purchase a camera package from a gentleman here. The original post is here:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?242332-FOR-SALE-DVX100B-and-Letus35-Extreme&p=2310566

I originally emailed the gentleman (as well as PM'd him here) and he gave me a phone number to call (646-702-0348). He said his name was Fred. His email was: enlight3ned@yahoo.com

In the initial emails Fred said that he expected to sell it locally which struck me as odd since he posted his camera here. So I called him. Fred sounds kind of dopey on the phone, not the type of person you'd expect to own gear like this or even know how to use it but he knew what the components he had were and he knew what each of them did so I gave him the benefit of the doubt despite having some reservations.

Fred and I exchanged a few phone calls and he finally got his Paypal situation figured out. He instructed me to send payment to tweety102075@yahoo.com. I did this and after not receiving the camera two weeks later, contacted Fred who answered the phone and instructed me that he did send it out but that he sent it out USPS through their cheapest method with no tracking.

After 3 weeks I bumped the original post and was promptly PM'd by someone here who also paid him for the same camera package and got the same "no tracking number" story. I'll let him speak up on his behalf if he wants.

So far I've determined that the Paypal email address goes to a Michelle Hicks in Columbus, Oh. Not really much in the way of super-sleuthing, just googled the email address. She's on Facebook, Myspace and a couple other Social Network sites. She apparently owns a dog breeding company with her husband.

To what degree she's involved in this, I don't know. Perhaps she's directly involved and knows about the scam, perhaps she allowed a friend or family member to use her Paypal account and then they took the money or maybe someone just seized her Paypal account/ Paypal address and she doesn't know. I don't know. All I know is I apparently paid her as did the other gentleman and neither of us have anything.

If anyone can offer any kind of assistance it would be greatly appreciated. I've had overwhelmingly good experiences on DVXUser and I think most people here have as well so I think it behooves everyone to deal with a scammer quickly. The money isn't a big deal so much as having someone out there who's going to continue to scam people and expect no one to do anything. So I'm doing something. :)

Good grief! What gets into people? It's bad enough politicians screw us, without us screwing each other too.

If you Paypal'ed her then start a dispute, also did you pay via credit card. Dispute that as well. Do you know if this was a verified Paypal account?

Just a note for paypal transactions, never just send money to an account, have a verified account request money only.

I've already opened up a dispute as has the other gentleman. I'm not holding my breath on getting the money back from Paypal but the other gentleman has informed me they now guarantee off-ebay transactions. I funded part of this with a credit card but paid with my business Paypal account so if Paypal doesn't give me my money I'm not sure I can issue a chargeback on the card and still be in good standing with them with my business.

My main goal is to get this guy's identity/ MO out there so others don't fall into the same trap.

Truth be told, he sounded pretty dumb on the phone and I had a bad feeling about it. I should have gone with my gut.

Did you think about calling local law enforcement out to Mrs. Hicks house or work. I had the same B.S. happen to me and i got their address and sent the local police out. I got money back pretty quick after the visit.

I'll be filing a police report on her. My only issue is I don't know if she is the name on the account or if it was just her email that was used. Paypal doesn't give you any info on the receiver's account unless they're a business.

Actually, Paypal is very good at getting money back but was this a verified account? Some accounts are not covered but know your rights. Paypal is not going to hold anything against you so do everything to get your money.

Someday, those types of people will get a knock on the door and it will not be as pleasant as a peace officer.

All the best and if I can offer any other solutions I will post.

Hey! I have a low post count but I am verified and 500+ 99% feedbacks on EBay for the past 13yrs an running!! =) I think when people do not have any verification or references, then I would just avoid a transaction.

1. Why not pay her a personal visit at her dog breeding company?

or

2. Call and ask to speak to her husband. Does the voice match? If so, go to Step 1.

Regardless whether anyone used her account or not; if it was her email address which was registered with Paypal, then she received the money.

Involve the authorities. And call RELENTLESSLY. Get every bit of information and lean into them. Like others have said, paypal is fairly solid on resolving issues like this. I have had several horrific situations that paypal solved within a few calls/emails.

Always sucks to hear about something like this.

Thanks for the support guys. I've dealt with Paypal for 9 years now through my business and my experience has always been that you're only guaranteed your money back if it's an eBay transaction. If it's an off-eBay transaction and they find a case in your favor they'll just get whatever money the person has in their account and if they ever add more to that account you'll get that too until you're made whole.

Now the other guy that got taken here informed me that Paypal told him they guarantee ALL transactions (eBay or otherwise) as of November of last year. If that's indeed the case, and after reading their terms and conditions it appears to be, that would be wonderful. It means we get our money back regardless of whether or not he's emptied that Paypal account. So that would be great.

My main concern is getting our money back. From that point I'm going to focus on finding him. All this information is free for anyone. If anyone wants to play super-sleuth just grab the info from my first post and feel free to go to town.

There's lot of big money being exchanged on this forum so it benefits all of us when we can weed out assholes (for lack of a better term) like this. I don't know how people do this. There are some crimes I can at least see how people can justify to themselves whether right or wrong but you can't justify purposely setting out to separate someone from their money. That's just straight up theft. I'll find them.

If they pay in lawyer fees as much as they stole from me I'll be happy. Something about Paypal making me whole and this person walking away with someone else's money still doesn't sit right with me.

Nothing worse than a thief. Anyone that has no problem with ripping somone out of their hard earned money is a selfish, sick, prick!! Sorry you guys had to go through this, and hopefully you understand that the normal dvxuser is honest and good natured.
