SHORT: Scallywags

Hi, a long time ago this site had a contest and the theme was Westerns. That gave me the initial idea to do a western with a cast of 2 children playing all 6 roles. I'm not trying to pass this off as "serious filmmaking" but we did put some effort into it, and hopefully you should find this entertaining.

"Scallywags" on YouTube...

Also, I wanted to mention a milestone. The first video I posted on this site 2 years ago, "Fast Cars, Bad Kids" started going viral last September for reasons that are not clear. In the past few months it has picked up over 500,000 new views! Weird to think a half-million people have viewed my little movie, with over 5,000 new viewers daily. You can check that out here:

Thanks for watching!

I'm not going to give "detail" tips and tricks, because I suppose this was mostly for fun ?

But in a way it might have some potential for children (like Teletubbies or so...), tv shows where children kinda "act" in.

And making a short with children is not easy...they're doing it quite well. Just watch out for not looking at the camera. And between cuts do a crossfade in sound
to make it smoother.

Thanks, dre83! Yes, I had a nightmare with the sound on this one. Something went wrong with my mic for about 20% of the dialog so there was a lot of crackle, and I had to re-record dialog and try to dub it in where I could, which was better than re-shooting the whole scene as far as kids are concerned. Normally I will layer in some sound clips to smooth out the silences and transitions, but I was having so many problems with bad audio that transitions became the least of my worries. Lesson learned, next time I'm wearing a headset during the shoot so I can hear what the mic is picking up as I shoot.

Thanks for the feedback!

it's not because "soundlevelmeters" are moving that the sound is good.

During shoot you ALWAYS have to wear headphones as a soundguy... ALWAYS...

But as you have discovered that already.... But I just wanted to say it... :-p

And I wonder, if the sound would have been good, would you have worn headphones the next time ?

Or if someone would have told you "wear headphones", would that have been better ? So that you were kinda "prepared" ?

Jumping to a lot of conclusions there, aren't you?
Hey, I'm just a dad with a camcorder making movies with his kids (as I'm sure you've figured out). Thought people might be interested. Maybe amateurs like me don't really belong here but we were all beginners once. After all, making mistakes is just one way to learn. I never had sound issues before this film, so it never occurred to me that I'd need to wear headphones. Lesson learned, right?

it was more some kind of "survey questioning"
there are ? - marks, so it's not that I "say it is like that"...

Don't worry

It's okay. I get a bit insecure on this site sometimes, there are so many great films here and such a high level of quality! So I lurk a lot, post little. Always lots for me to learn.

Yeah, that's all about the lighting and the clothes/props. The guns were silver so unfortunately they picked up the green reflections. Next time I'm going with all black clothes and props!:)
