Saw the Hvx 200 today at panny open house

Ok, my post was misunderstood. I am first in line for the HVX. My point is people want the P2 to record hours upon hours of HD footage when it comes out (for cheap). With little to deliver HD on it is not a major format that is usable by most professionals today. I think I stated clearly HD is on everyone's horizon. The beauty of the HVX is that allows you to slowly adapt to HD demand. I anticipate I will be shooting far more DVCPro50 with HVX then HD in the year or two to come. But it will be nice to immediately have the HD option should the demand for HD go up quickly.

Your point that you give your customers a HD data copy for their computer is interesting. Shows some good salesmenship on your part. Selling them on paying a little more for DVCProHD shouldn't be too hard for you. I don't understand your concern with P2 then. By December you will have an embarassment of choices...
A: shoot events in HDV (in your case you already have the camera)
B: shoot them with HVX with extra P2 cards and charge more. Just need to sell your customers on the superiority of DVCProHD.
C: use the HVX + firestore solution when it comes out.

I'm commenting to the people demanding ultra-cheap low-compression HD right now (as if under $10,000 for DVCProHD is not already cheap). As previously stated, cheap DVCProHD is talked about by some as if it's a fundamental right. If you can't afford it, you can't afford it, and more importantly you really don't need it today. As HD demand goes up, the cards come down in price and all the HVX owners will all be making a profit in the end.

Phillip, it was never meant as a flame. Sorry if it came off that way (got your wink:) ). I am trying to find a productive way of explaining that the HVX + P2 cards will adapt to your workflow as HD becomes a more common format.

Panasonic -- run by a woman?

Panasonic -- run by a woman?

I'm convinced that Panasonic must be run (perhaps secretly) by a woman.

The attraction is in the mystery -- just how far will the HVX200 go???

What will she be like when we actually get to meet her?
And that first kiss -- how hot will it be?
Will there still be this much talk about her after she's been out on a few dates?

I, for one, can't wait to meet her.

is some good source. Press conference will be i think on Tuesday.

Phil, this is just another PR outlet about new DVD releases.
Their reports about the format development stem from standard news agencies, so nothing special about that.

Could you please be more specific about your source about the press conference?
This would indeed signal some important break-though in that area.

That's what's in the BDA's calendar:

"The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) would like to invite you to “Blu-ray Disc Showcase” on May 16, 2005 for an opportunity to see various Blu-ray Disc related exhibits. Number of Blu-ray Disc Association member companies are exhibiting their technology/product, covering playback and recording devices, key components, testing equipments, disc manufacturing equipments, etc.

The Blu-ray Disc Showcase will be held on Monday, May 16, 2005 from 10:30am-6:00pm at Shinagawa Prince Hotel Main Banquet Hall (Executive Tower) in Tokyo, JAPAN (http://www.princehotelsjapan.com/shinagawaprincehotel/)

Moin Herr Kraft,

I am trying to find the page where Sony stated the end of the talks on Tuesday. Still I am very sure there will be no solution before autumn. But perhaps all of you having preordered the HVX will have to go through a second manual about HD DVD at the same time you're be getting the cam.

@Wabbit

No harm done. You see: I am not as godd a salesman as my Mac dealer is. He talked all his customers into buying MacMinis wih big screens. So I just added some nice video to their collection. Mostly using the apple intermediate codec which is OK for HD, but the thought of DVCPRO HD on one of these screens is tempting.

Keep on rocking. By the time you can buy the HVX w will have some workflow and spared enough cigarette money for lots'a'cards.

And I was simply pointing out- since we are talking about P2 cards here- that P2 cards would not be effective for event videographers. Yes- the Firestore is a good (not great since it maxes out at 80 GB) alternative, ....

But this product is not even a product yet, so how do you know its limitation is 80GB? You don't.

Wait and see,

Jan

We're all assuming you need a 7200RPM drive with its' fast access times to handle DVCPRO-HD.
Today the only 2.5" drive that quick is the Hitachi 60GB. They aren't selling the 80GB, yet.

Please inform if possible that a 5400RPM or 4200RPM drive (as a generalization) could handle
comfortably and without recurrent errors, 100Mbps HD. I don't think they can..

im still crossing my fingeres they take barry greens tip and make the firestore a controller only that you just hook up any firewire or usb2.0 drive to. so the firestore hooks up to the 1394 port on the cam and then you hang one or even mulitple OFF THE SHELF EXTERNAL DRIVES drives you can swap off the firestore. ..would be nice then you could still give the drive away at the end of the shoot.. cause having to keep it or copy all contents over at the end wouldnt be nearly as practical.. and i dont see why it couldnt just be done the above way. ..should keep cost down as well cause it has no drive of its own.

Hitachi just released the 7K100 on May 11th. It is a 2.5 inch drive that runs at 7200 rpm, 8MB buffer, and has 100GB storage. They come in IDE or Serial ATA. Shipping now!!

Looks good for the future of Firestore!!

I like being proven innaccurate. Thanks, res.
Man. Out of town for one weekend and I'm already behind the times! lol.

No problem :)....I'm an Official Hitachi *Fanboy* so I always keep up with their latest and greatest drives. Can't wait to get one for my Mac Mini!! That should help out ALOT!!

Exactly. The FS-4 isn't the only product they make. Look at the hard disk unit they made for the DV5000U -- you can hot-swap off-the-shelf internal hard disks into it. You might be able to get a $200 300-gig drive and plug in for five hours, then pull out the drive alone and hand that to the client (although I'd probably prefer a firewire or USB2 external drive, just for safety)...

Moin, moin Phil,

ya know, I only believe in written and signed contracts and more and more often even not in them. And never ever in a statement.

This is the latest news from the BD/HD-DVD negatiations' battlefield:
"Toshiba says: unifying DVD formats may prove too difficult".

Could be rattling to make Sony/Matsy move a little bit, but could also have a more serious background - they not only talk about technology but about lots of money, too (licences). Outcome could also depend on which major studio recently changed their intentions to favour which format.

Knowing that many people just read what they *want* to read, the Sony message from last week could have been a little bit of rattling on Sony's side meaning they *ended* the talks not because being successful but they wanted to pull out which is something pretty different.
From that perspective the current score is "Deuce".

"Just like everything else Moore's Law applies to, memory, processing speeds et-cetera these cards will jump in capacity and shrink in price. "

In the meantime, event photographers will buy something else. I don't see the big plus of P2 - in fact it is really a big downside. While P2 goes down in price, so does everything else.
The real cost with a P2 workflow must also include a laptop, in itself incredibly unreliable - so should you take two.
I don't understand the P2 push. Why not a good standard direct to HD solution - cheaper, greater storage, faster transfer.
Forgive me if I am missing something.

Event tapers wouldn't find much utility in any HD camera if maximum record length is a concern.
The one time in my life I had to record an all day seminar event, I borrowed a DVCAM deck.
I went through 4 - 184 minute tapes that day.. Man alive that was a long day.....

(Off on a tangent here.)

I think there will be no format fusion, and HD-DVD will win out as the standard. (Spare me the diatribe about how much “better” Blu-Ray is; it’s irrelevant to the calculus, which is purely practical and economic.)

(Back on topic.)

Read through all the other threads. It’s WELLLLLLLLLL-covered.

This thread started so great, and then swirled down into the toilet of P2 doubt. The HVX will most likely be an amazing little camera with all kinds of amazing features. Companies will create products to support it. Why? Because they can make money. FireStore doesn't have to continue using 2.5" drives. They can make whatever kind of product they want to support this camera. Same thing with everything else. NLE's can get patched or upgraded to support it. In fact, if they don't guess who will end up losing in the end? The NLE company. We are not stuck with what we have folks. For every limitation, there will always be people who create ways to circumvent them. Quit whining about P2 every damn time someone talks about the HVX. If you don't like it. Don't use it. Peace.

I agree - HVX will be great, but don't see P2 as part of the solution. Just think - for two P2 cards and a laptop, you can buy another HVX.

It would be nice to have a small RAID configuration. The redundancy would reduce the the danger of shock-induced drive failure.
