Save Andromeda/Hydra!!!

Thanks guys! Were at 174 and growing still :)

Lets put this info into our signatures, mine is a good example... Just think, every person who does this greatly increases the awareness. Many people still don't even know these technologies are at risk.

Thanks!

What are Andromeda and Hydra?

Andromeda and Hydra are both 3rd party camera modifications made by Reel Stream Inc. These modifications, to be brief, enabled both cameras to output footage at HD or greater resolutions. Each modification also fully sampled (4:4:4) and captured each channel, as well as allowed for uncompressed recording. Each modification also extends the dynamic range of its host camera. This is essentially a RAW capture modification. The Andromeda was for the DVX series of cameras, and the Hydra was poised for the HVX. From what I heard last at the Reel Stream forum, potentially any true 24p 3 chip camera out there could have Hydra installed, so that modification had a lot of potential in the market place. The Andromeda captures footage at 10 bit via user definable LUTs (Look Up Tables) that go from 12 bit (which is what the DVX ADC’s output) down to 10 bit. The Hydra is capable of 14 bit linear capture without the use of LUTs. To put this in perspective, current film scans are conducted at 10 bit.

As an owner and operator of an Andromeda camera, I can personally say that it puts your camera into the same league as a Viper Filmstream camera in terms of operation and features. Its performance is substantially better than what you can get out of the stock camera setup.

What’s happening?

Reel Stream Inc., the company that brought the Andromeda modification for DVX cameras onto the market, is closing and will be selling both the Andromeda and Hydra technologies. The future buyer is currently not known by the public. The last official word about this situation from Reel Stream said that the technology would probably not be made available to the public anymore. BUT, Reel Stream also mentioned that this could change. The only way this is going to change is if we can prove a demand for these modifications. Please sign the petition and help PROVE the demand! Why Help?

By signing the petition, you will help show an active interest in these modifications. Keeping these modifications on the market means more choices for film makers as a whole, and it will only help promote competition to create better cameras with fewer performance compromises. We’ve accepted limited features for years, now we have a chance to show that we want more at an affordable price, and these modifications show it is clearly possible! Before Reel Stream stopped installing the Andromeda, they were offering it for $2,500 and Reel Stream was a very small company with only a handful of people involved in it. Imagine what kind of price a larger company with better resources could offer.

How Do I Help?

Thanks for your help!

All I know for sure is that Hydra was at the very least up and running as a prototype for quite sometime. As for why he's selling, he hasn't stated the reasons officially yet.

Its official, hundreds of people have signed the petition! Lets keep moving, this petition gets better and better everyday.

The more I think about it, the more I think about how much it will suck if the technology actually does leave public hands.

Companies have enough money and 4:4:4 systems. The ability for anybody to use it, given they have the will power and energy to expand themselves, is what made the Andromeda mod so beautiful.

God only knows what Hydra could have done.

Come on Juan.

EDIT - Did the Andromeda mod also enable people to get true 24p, with no pulldown, from their DVX's? Since you could export it as a TIFF sequence could it be 24 solid 16-bit frames per second?

The short answer is YES. The mod captures everything at 24 fps. You can render it into any format your system supports, so "you name it" really....

I really wish I had enough money earlier. I don't feel secure taking out a loan at this point or anything.

Something truly needs to be done.

Do you think it's likely this new dealer/company is going to be ridiculously expensive or not allow it in DVX's?
