Sanken CS-1 or Sennheiser MKH-416. Why?

I'm a totally open and unbiased guy. I like facts and that tends to make me a little OCD about things... I think more people then you'd guess find these posts and base decisions on what they read here.

Like so many people, I had to rely on the help of professionals to build a foundation of knowledge to start from... then I took what I read and applied it. So far I've rarely been steered wrong and I've grown to really appreciate the professional input these forums offer.

So here's my question for Oleg, Dave Fisk, and anybody else who's actually qualified to answer.

Sanken CS-1... why or why not? Sennheiser MKH-416... why or why not?

I was totally SOLD on the Sanken CS-1 for it's uncanny ability to reject side and rear noise... plus that mic doesn't seem to have a tail (meaning no extra rear pickup like most shotguns have... for you newbies).

Anyway, I have a 416 now and it seems to have all the same qualities... I've made some recordings of the side and rear rejection and it's been nothing short of amazing! From what I can tell it seems to be at least as good at side/rear rejection as the Sanken.

Am I kidding myself? Is it just that the Sanken sounds better? I thought the 416 sounded fuller then the Sanken... but I'm STILL intrigued by the CS-1 and I'm wondering why somebody should choose it over the 416?  ::)

Re: Sanken CS-1 or Sennheiser MKH-416. Why?

well you can get a sanken for about $350 less than the 416 from mediasupplystore, so there's a significant difference in price... Plus, i've heard many pros were very satisified with the results. it's a great little mic. I love my sanken, although it's not really an "outdoors" kind of mic

Re: Sanken CS-1 or Sennheiser MKH-416. Why?

Dan, thanks for your reply!

I started to get the impression that the Sanken was the superior mic from what I was reading. I still think both mics are top choices, but after getting the 416 I'm thinking that it's more a matter of taste then one being any better then the other.

I thought it would be interesting to get some thoughts from everybody who owns one or both of 'em.

I'll try to get some clips posted later today so people can compare

Re: Sanken CS-1 or Sennheiser MKH-416. Why?

sorry didnt find cs-1 as the mike i must have , its sounds nice , but folling a little bit between the chears , it doesnt come close to cmc541 inside and it doesnt deliver what the cs -3 can do outside , its little bit dry mike for my taist, i prefer the 416 over it ,
another thing -the cs-1 have problems to be connect with sound devices preamps , you have to cut mike input at least 60 hz  to privent  overloading on mike pre (those companies know about the problem and blaiming each other :-), the same problem existing with sanken cub-1

Re: Sanken CS-1 or Sennheiser MKH-416. Why?

The cmc541 is it a new mic? I have not heard of it. Is it a super cardoid, or a shotgun. Who makes it, $?

Re: Sanken CS-1 or Sennheiser MKH-416. Why?

thats schoeps . cmc 5 +mk 41 hc , the same to cmc 641 (12-52) exept it works 48v ph only

Re: Sanken CS-1 or Sennheiser MKH-416. Why?

Wow the mk41 sounds like a beauty i got a test sample from Bryan Beasleigh along with mkh60 and me66. Schoeps definitely takes it in this round. What is the comparison between mk41 and sanken cs1? Also do you guys think it is a profitable decision to get Jay Rose's book on audio? Thinking about getting my mom to sponsor me on that since it is a book after all heh...
