NAND chips and SSD, it comes even faster...
Jan 5th 2007,
SanDisk, the world's largest supplier of flash memory data storage products, announced on Thursday the release of a new solid-state (SSD) 32GB hard drive for laptop computers.
...
Based entirely on NAND flash RAM, the 32GB SanDisk UATA 5000 is a 1.8-inch form-factor drive that features a 62 Mbyte/sec throughput for a 512-byte transfer rate—more than 100 times faster than most hard disk drives, SanDisk claims.
...
With no moving parts, the drive does not need to spin into action or seek files in the same way that conventional hard disk drives do, according to SanDisk. Even if one were to accidentally drop or bang their laptop, there are no hard disk heads to crash into spinning platters with the new SSD 1.8" UATA 5000.
...
Pricing for the UATA 5000 has been set at a substantial $600
...
"Once we begin shipping the 32GB SSD for notebook PCs, we expect to see its increasing adoption in the coming years as we continue to reduce the cost of flash memory,"
2007 is just beginning...! But well.
