That's a hard day's work for that camera. It's one of the units being used to shoot a program for the History Channel called Sandhogs. It's about the greatest tunnel ever built, the Aqueducts in New York. This particular tunnel has been under construction for 40 years and won't even be done until 2013. The program should air tonight.

And yes, as I understand it, they cleaned up that HVX and put it back to work the next day.

Wow. I saw the promo for sand hogs and wondering how they were protecting the cameras. Apparently by buying cheap ones :) Wow.

Hey Barry,

Do you know any of the technical settings they used? 720, 1080, 24p, 30p, etc?

I just watched the trailers for it, it looks pretty good!

I'd agree, from watching the several trailers it looks like every shot underground in the tunnels was all hvx's, I saw some shadows of the camera men and camera's, they had light panels micro's on the hvx's, surprised they didn't use the larger mini's.

Now the only shots that don't look like the hvx's are the studio interviews with the sandhogs.

I wonder why they couldnt afford a portabrace and a lens protection? I guess the HVX still works? if so its a good rough test :-)

Holy sandstorm Batman! I thought our HVX's took a beating doing Agriculture shoots on Tractors. This has got to be one of the hardest jobs ever put on a HVX's shoulders!
Thanks for the picture Barry.
I wonder what the camera guys looked like? :)

It exciting to see that only two years ago cable channels were saying NO to using HVX's. Now whole shows are shot on them. Awesome!

My goodness, he he he he.

IS most of the show shot on HVX's, or are other camera's used?

Yes the HVX was used for most of the show and the special. More indepth story is here:http://www.broadcastnewsroom.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=577117&afterinter=true

I have to say when they sent me the picture of the HVX, I had to know the story. They ended up using 18 cameras total for the serias and the special. If you haven't seen the show, it is awesome.

Enjoy,

Jan

I guess I should read the entire thread before responding, so I can also add that these were rental cameras and everyone knew going in that they would be trashed at the end. There is a rumore that the special might be up for an Emmy.

Wow, a very impressive story and filmmaker. I really admire documentarians that have the balls to immerse themselves to that level into their subject.

I am recording this one tonight, it sounds amazing.

Hey Jan,

My HVX has been through heavy rain, 15+ tornadoes, mud, dirt, dust & sand blowing at 80+ mph, 120 mph tornado RFD from an F4, dropped in several fields, blown over on the tripod a dozen times and one car crash and after a cleanup it looks and performes like brand new.

The only problems from all the abuse are a head phone jack that only works when there is tension on the cord from a certain angle and the screw hole on the top handle got stripped out.

I should have taken pics of the camera the day we were hit by a tornado, it was covered in mud. :bath:

We left my daughter at home to record it. My stupid fault my DirecTV box is programmed to lock out kids beginning at 7:00 PM. Damn!

Anyone know when and if they will re-broadcast it? Had to go out for wife's B-Day last night.

Dan
