Samyang XEEN - new line of cinema lenses announced

I agree I didn't see much difference either outside of color cast, and I don't think the breathing was as bad as previously stated obviously not as good as the CP2, but for the price it's a not a bad lens.

IMO any time you need to add "for the price" we are talking about something crappy that needs to be justified. Don't get me wrong, I use that expression all the time too. But basically that's what it means.

I think the CP2 in that test looked much better. Trully visible difference and not only color. Like somebody already said, for the same price I would choose the CP2 any day. The thing though is that the Cinealtas are as good as CP2s and with the sale Sony is running costs less than these low end Samyangs. That is the real bang for the buck and lesson to take away here.

Sound logic here Sttratos. I now think the cheaper Samyangs are pretty good for the price. I think the BMCC is pretty good for the price, and the pocket camera, the F3 and the FS700 pretty amazing for the price. Hmmm, on second thought I do think some of those are pretty good for the price. Man, you just made this so confusing. Is it not possible some things are just pretty good for the price?

When you say..."Don't get me wrong, I use that expression all the time too", doesn't that mean you are in the regular habit of endorsing "something crappy that needs to be justified?".

Yes, that's pretty much what it means, yes. I guess we are all at fault being gear geeks.

But I also think it's less of an endorsement and more of a warning though. Like in, it's cheap but be aware that this is for a reason. In a way saying it's good for the price is just another way of saying you get what you pay for.

Unless you add a "for the price", you are not talking to me. I can't afford an Alexa with Cooke primes, not to own, not as a rental. I need the best I can find *within my budget* (which is way below XEEN levels, btw).

Samuel, I think you're a great poster ... for the price.

(I keed, I keed)

Lensrentals did a mechanical comparison against the Zeiss CP.2.
There is one internal piece they are not too sure about, but apart from that it looks really good.

That one piece that Samyang is using to engage the helical is why I would not consider the Xeens. It is the same design they use for the DS lenses and that design is why I ended up selling my full set of Rokinon lenses. Over time, that plastic piece wears down and causes a whirring noise while focusing and the design allows slop in the focusing ring. I kept taking about the lenses and trying to figure out ways to improve the operation and ultimately gave up and sold the lenses. It's nice that Samyang got rid of the rest of the plastic and improved the iris operation and focus throw, but I think that helical design is the real weak link.

Yes, that's exactly LensRental's fear, and they open lots of lenses. It seems it's better designed than the normal samyangs, but it doesn't look great. :(

No one will know about any 'fears' of the nylon wearing out for years, and as that is a pretty low stress/strain point IMO I'm going to disagree that it's a source of real concern.

The focus on the Xeens feels better and more precise than some other (more expensive) lenses we stock.

If there's a problem, or if there isn't, you'll definitely be among the first to know :)

And, boom - the prices are already dropping on Xeens. $300 off per lens in some stores. Others have a trio for $6,000 ($1,500 off the original price of $2,500 each)

Can someone post some picture of these?

i assume you're looking for these?
