F3: Samyang 14 and 24 on the F3

shots look nice. but some nasty Aliasing. Why's that?

I'm also considering picking up a set of these lenses. I've heard not so stellar stuff about the 24 mm though so I was hesitant about that one.

My NLE interpreted the Prores files as interlaced so I replaced the video and it should be free of aliasing now. I didn't notice it at first thanks to my Pioneer plasma is so darn good at deinterlacing.

There's some softness on the 24mm but if you compare to many other F1.2-1.4 lenses it's about the same and it goes away at around 2.8 on this lens and often you never notice it's a bit softer wide open. Canons 24/1.4 is just as soft as the Samyang at 1.4.

kool. sounds like a decent buy then. The 14mm may be out for me though because it doesn't have front threads. thats correct right? I dont roll with a mattebox right now...plus I like the option of being able have a small set up and build up if I need.

btw the video is much better now :)

I didn't see the aliasing, but did notice the appearance of it in sd mode. Try looking on 1080 monitor at full res.

That F3 really produces a nice image.

I think the use of a mattebox on the 14mm is unnecessary so the lack of front thread is not a big deal. I had a hard time to produce any shallow dof with that lens.

They do look very soft but nice. Why did you have a hard time to get shallow DOF? because you need to get really close? Anyway if I had such a camera I would definitely get the Samyang set. Thanks for the test!

Hey Editman - hope you're doing well. You seem to be having a lot of fun with your F3 but I bet you still miss your 101 a little! Just out of interest, how do you go about exposing for SLOG just using the LCD? I find I need a WMV monitor to do this? Best wishes, Sparky

You have to get close to do the shallow dof thing but I think it's better to choose the 24 T1.5 if you want some separation by dof or even better the 35 T1.5. The 14mm is for wide shots and for that I like it a lot.

I'm doing well thanks :) I think the F3 is a great camera. Heavy but great. I don't miss the AF101 at all when I see the footage coming out of the F3.

I know the boundaries within S-log and when I'm doing a piece like this I don't need to be that picky because I'm following my own view of what looks nice. I find Lut to be a bit confusing because you need to expose without it so I only see that as a feature when you're on set with clients looking at a monitor. With s-log I put white at about 68% or just follow the histogram. I'm also relying on the spot meter to check that I'm exposing correct. Compared to the AF101 I have so much headroom and coming from the AF101 were you had to be a maniac monkey about exposure I find that the experience from the AF helps a lot to eyeball things. And I'm used to work fast and nail exposure pretty fast.

Sometimes s-log makes you a bit sloppy because you know that you can tweak it pretty much as you like in post as long as you don't do anything stupid.

Very nice overall. I was surprised to see banding in the final shot as you recorded to the BlackMagic in ProResHQ.
I haven't experienced this when recording to the Ki Pro using the same codec.

The lenses look pretty nice, and I actually liked the flaring. Any sharpening in post?

No sharpening just colour correction. The banding comes from the post process, I made an 8-bit H264 file for vimeo but the originals have no banding. I to like the shape of the flares from these lenses.

I tested the 24 and 35 against my Canon 24/1.4 II and 35/1.4 tonight. Canons 24 is a bit sharper in the center but softer in corners than the Samyang 24 and the Samyang 35 was sharper than Canons 35.
Samyang does cheat a bit with these lenses. The 24 is more like 28mm and the 35 more like 40mm. That is compared to the Canon lenses.

The 14mm looks nice for super 35 and smaller which I would plan to shoot( would be 2 much distortion on FF). But i'd need a mattbox where I am. I wouldnt want to go more than f8 for deep DOF shots due to diffraction and sometimes the sun is Jamaica is really intense. Nice looking lens though.
