Samurai Short Shot on HVX and Brevis

Hi guys,

I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and link to the short film I directed in February '08. I've been hesitant to make any announcements about it since it was more of an experiment than anything else. But due to DP John Matysiak's rad skillz, it turned out looking pretty damn sweet.

The actual short film is very dialogue based so I like showing the trailer off more. I have to say the experiment came out very well. Now it's just about gathering the funds to turn it into the full story.

Tech details:
Shot on the HVX-200 with Brevis 35 adapter and Nikon prime lenses. Ranging from 35 to 100 mm
Shot in 720/24p, using 720/60p for the overcrank.
Edited in Final Cut Pro and colored in Apple Color.
Shot on location in Big Bear Mountain, CA and Cal State Long Beach University Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden.

One thing I want to go about remedying in the next run is to work on getting the image sharper and without as much vignetting. May have been the nature of the prime lenses.

I like it and looks very promising. The snow scenes look a little blown out and I have my monitor set to 2.2 and it still is a little bright. Does the snow have some detail in the original footage? Good locations to shoot at.

Yeah, I think the Brevis was crapping out from the cold in the opening shot. The snow scenes were color corrected to have blown out highlights since they were from a flashback sequence.

Does that guy have a really hairy neck? It looks good but consider cutting the length of the shots in half. The trailer cuts really slow.

Hairy? Maybe it's the costume and wig. Yeah I agree it's one of the longer trailers I've made, considering it's a teaser. But hey, the actual short film itself was kind of lacking so I wanted to pump as much good footage into the actual teaser.

As for the feature film, we would really need investors to pull it off, as doing something like this on a nano budget is near impossible. I think the next step would be to make this into a more robust short film.
