Ok so checking out some details about the Samurai recorder and not finding much info about what its actually recording other than "prores" but what exactly... ProResHQ is 6:1 compression which is nice, but on their site it says "uncompressed" if so that would be a HUGE amount of data and very short recording times... Does anyone know if they allow other flavors of recording with either compression or uncompressed, or is this all just one setting at uncompressed like the shuttledeck from blackmagic?

Samurai info only please, I know the Ninja does a few flavors, but I'm asking about Samurai .

I believe Samurai and Ninja will use the same recording formats which is different flavours of ProRes. They will not be able to record uncompressed.

when they talk about the uncompressed dealing with samurai, i think they are just referring that your HDSDI is a uncompressed source. atomos seems to be a adamant believer of high quality compressed recording. David has been on the boards and has never said anything about uncompressed recording and in fact seemed against it, and all about their devices only doing pro res. so you shouldn't have anything to worry about in that department. all flavors of pro res should be avail on the samurai when it releases, and MAYBE the additional option of uncompressed recording for people who want it, since some people are all about it.

thanks guys, yeah because on the website they have a big "uncompressed to apple pro res" on there and I have no idea what that really means

Hi Giuseppe,

I'm sorry if the wording on the website is confusing. If I may, I'll explain exactly what we mean. Tom was right in his post. When we say we record "uncompressed to Apple ProRes" we mean that we take an uncompressed signal (ie HD SDI) from the camera, and we compress it to Apple ProRes, which, at the highest quality we can record, will be a 6x compression relative to uncompressed. Apple's codec at this level is visually identical to uncompressed. What that means is that even experts can't tell the difference visually between ProRes and uncompessed.

We prefer this workflow because you get the same quality and need 1/6th of the storage. That has to be a good thing. It also means that your computer won't be maxed out because ProRes is edit-friendly (which means that it is very easy to decode and encode) and the data rate is lower.

So, just to summarize: HD SDI is always uncompressed. You can't send a compressed signal over SDI. We compress this using ProRes, which takes up 1/6th of the space, but looks the same.

I hope this helps.

What are the dimensions and weight of the Samurai?

It's 140(W)x87(H)x41(D)mm. I only have the Ninja weight to hand. The Samurai is slightly bigger but not much. The Ninja is 363g without batteries and storage, and 671g with. You'll find that HDDs are slightly - but not much - heavier than SSDs.

We will be making an announcement about exact shipping dates soon. It's all going well with the Samurai; but everything depends on our final testing: it needs to be 100% right before we release it.

Apart from that, I can't really talk about future products and enhancements.

Hi David,

Thanks for the excellent feedback. Just to clarify: THe Samurai will record to Prores HQ, and not regular Prores 4:2:2, correct?

Actually, the Samurai will record to ProRes HQ, ProRes 4:2:2 and ProRes LT.
