Samurai has shown me its true value...

Thanks chaps!
Debating whether to get the Samuri for the AF or just get a GH2 and use the hack.

That should be an easy choice - the GH2 is no video camera (I have a hacked one, and it makes for a nice B cam), you're not getting redundancy, and the CODEC might not be as friendly as ProPres.

Its kind of two different things.

One way you end up with two cameras.... and the other way you get one camera plus a recorder.

So Shooter, you think the footage you get from the AF plus this device makes a significant difference over the internal codec? You've touted your fondness of how well the internal codec holds up.

Hey Kyle. I do believe the internal Codec stands up very well.

Kind of the main point of this post though was that some new doors opened for me when I installed Dda Vinci Resolve Lite. ( It was released about a week ago and it is now for Win7 as well).

Thing is...Resolve does not ingest AVCHD natively and I am not a fan of transcode workflows. (*** See my next new post - question- about this matter ***)

Next thing is...Resolve LOVES ProRes HQ & 422 ....and lucky ole me....I just happen to have a Samurai that records this for me. ( Actually I dual record to AVCHD simultaneously). So I guess in a certain way, I can say...

this device makes a significant difference over the internal codec

Resolve is a powerful silky smooth CC tool with Prores but obviously I can not test the difference with AVCHD because Resolve cant use it natively.

Now I have it on my own NLE Systems... its a brilliant game changer and going to be another earner for me.

The jigsaw has come together very very well.

Yes, I would like to hear from someone or see samples between the two.
Aside from CC and Grading, is there a visible difference in picture quality between 24 avchd and 220mb pr with the samurai?
Would love to see af100 & Voigtlander tested.

Thanks!

If you take two samples one from each internal AVCHD vs PRORES the main difference is this. AVCHD smears the image compared to the PRORES file. It's not by much but enough to rob the image of some detail. This smearing also contributes to higher probability to run into banding with AVCHD than with PRORES. The higher bitrate and nature of PRORES makes it more robust when moving the camera fast.

I cant see any major discernible difference between AVCHD and Prores HQ (except on the scopes) but 4 2 2 is absolutely the better way to go for post work.

I believe one gets an external recorder for more reasons rather than just the expectation....ones pictures will automatically look better.

Okay, so I got myself:

A nice monitor.
Automatic backup of my media.
Works in the exactly the codec I want (422).
Works with no problems so far together with the AG-AF 101.
Small, lightweight, almost obscenely easy to use even for someone who is no DP (moi).
Nice little travel case, docking station & adapters, drives are easy to install and the touch screen display is fine and not complicated to use.

Questions remaining:

Why no AC connector/adapter (at least here in Germany)?
Will it be reliable?
Are connectors and body stable enough in constant work?
When will the AVID-codec come?
What else might be in store with firmware upgrades?

For the price it has it's the machine for me to have. Others can do more and better maybe - but: My neighbours 7er BMW also is quicker than my little Suzuki. But as the latter is good enough for me and for what I need I rather spend my money on other things (cameras for instance..;-)).

Good buy? Ask me in January but for now I honestly like to think: Yes.

Has anyone seen this one? camera is set 24fps and some of the footages have some sort of mirror effect.

Can you replicate the issue and is it imtermittent?

Upside at least is ...great having the back up file.
