Tried to use this combo with no luck as far as triggering via sdi. goes.
Works with pix 240 so flags are there.

Any thoughts?

This has been brought up before with the 250. Why would you want an external recorder when you have so many high quality internal recording options? Intra100 and upcoming 200 should be toe to toe with Prores.

I think these ext devices are only useful for a specific niche codec workflow. All else, the tethering is a recipe for disaster in the long run due to unreliable cabling and compatibility. Hate to see all of the sudden with a fast pan the SDI cable got loose and signal is lost.

Subjectively, the HPX250 overall image quality is already maxed out at AVC-I 50. Because I need full raster, has to go w/ AVC-I 100. Small improvements in color depth but the lens' optical performance is really the culprit, not the cam's. PX270, I have absolutely no hope on the lens to improve at the mid $5.5K price point. It appears to be the same one or same one with slight improvement on the HPX250. We can clearly see that a quality lens price hasn't at all gone down in decades. They usually cost about 10-20x more than the cam body. No signs of it coming down at all.

I can see it being useful on a AVC only cameras like the AF-100, or for proxys on a RED or something. But a cam like the 250/270 is good enough out of the box.

client wanted prores, was not my decision. Seems odd that both the 250 and the 270 would have this problem. I confirmed the flags are there with a pix240.

I agree with verzap, clients want an edit ready format and converting P2 files to Pro Res 422 HQ on location is very time consuming. Has anyone contacted Atomos on this, perhaps they can address the problem in a firmware fix?

P2 is ready to edit on most NLE's today, so why convert? Just drop on timeline and edit. For VNR's , I edit right from P2 cards, encode to H264, and upload to the news server. Looks great. Sometimes someone will give me Pro Rez and H264 files for the same job. I edit all P2, ProRez, H264 realtime together. But, i'm using GrassValley Edius, so maybe thats why it easy. My Adobe Premiere is almost as good.

Some have said that why use an external recorder when you have in camera recording formats like AVC Intra 100 or now AVC Ultra 200. Others mention that P2 formats are edit ready, but that’s not the case for clients and those of us that still use FCP-7.

In support of using an external recorder I would record in camera as well, then you could hand your client a edit ready Pro Res or DNxHD hard disk or SSD copy and you would still have your in camera P2 files as a back up.

New Update:
Phil;
There is another way that the Samurai Blade can do Start/Stop trigger through the HD-SDI.
Atomos Recorders have a auto TC Clip recording. If the TC is moving forward in this mode, the Samurai Blade will automatically start recording. It will stop the Clip recording if the TC stops.
TC moving forward is initiated in the Camera itself.
You check out this mode of operation with the Atomos Online operation demo at this web link. http://www.atomos.com/atom-os5/
Go under the TC menu and put the camera source as none/Time Code. The turn the TC icon on so it is yellow.
This use of rolling TC to start/stop clip recording is also outlined in the manual.
Thank you,
Matt

For long-duration event work (like a religious ceremony), recording to my Samurai in ProResHQ appears to be slightly higher quality than AVCi100. It also means that I can start editing immediately (in FCP7) when I get back to the office…no Log & Transfer. It also serves as backup copy.

In the few short weeks since I received my 270s the one thing that I am still wrestling with is being able to record 1080/23.98 to the Samuari…doesn't appear to work…The Samurai reports that it is receiving a 23.98 signal but won't record when SDI out on the PX270 is set to "Native".

SDI "Native'. Never seen that before. I've worked on large shoots with 4 HPX500 cameras, shooting 24P (23.98). For backup, we had camera SDI out to 4 Panasonic HD1600 recorders. The "Bigshot" tech guy couldn't get the recorders to record 24P. He said he had the recorders in 24P mode and should work. What the Bigshot didn't know, and what most people don't know, is that SDI carry's your 24P video on a 60i interlace stream. When you bring your video into your editing system, you have to use pulldown to extract the extra frames. Pretty easy. Even on the 5th HD recorder that was recording the switched show live from a SDI switcher didn't work for the guy. He said all the cameras are set for 24P, so it should work. After I went into all of the HD recorder menus, and switched the input to 60i, did it work. I should have not helped him, he was a jerk. But, it was 10min. before the show and I wanted to make sure we all got paid. Haaaaaa. Being a techy has it's awards.

Great story…and you did the right thing by helping him out, despite whatever attitude he had.

One clarification: When I wrote "Native" mode, I meant to write "System". When the camera is set to 1080/59.94P, the two selections for SDI Out are "System" (line and frequency, according to the manual) and "1080i". I need to go back and look at this anew this evening, but as far as I know, the Samurai auto-detects it's input…nothing to set except for the codec.

So if what you're saying applies here, then I would hope that the pulldown added to the 1080i stream is the "Advanced" type, designed to be easily removed upon ingest to the NLE.

Thanks for the response!
