Samsung NX1 Log Gamma Dynamic Range

Anyone have any idea how many stops of latitude the NX1 has with the new Gamma settings in the most recent firmware update? It was around 10 stops before the FW update so I was curious if it gained a stop or not. I'm selling my C100 and I'm looking for a cam to hold me over until I can pony up for the C300 Mk2. My C100 probably had 12 ish stops so I understand it will be a compromise but Samsung really needs to figure out the DR and rolling shutter, they are so close to having a perfect camera on their hands.

DR numbers are not comparable between different sources. Too many ways to measure this, and too subjective if you're going for the more useful "usable DR" definition.

But we have this test against an a7S, with my take on it here. Summary:

So, in total, I'd say the a7S has around 1.3 stops better DR than the NX1, which puts the NX1 around the middle of the table, ahead of the 5D3 but behind the NEX-5N. And in any case, clearly ahead of the GH4.

That test was really helpful, you really have to protect the highlights with the NX1 and work the shadows in post. While it lacks in DR compared to the A7s it's 4k internal is stunning and downscaled to 1080p looks absolutely amazing IMO. Native 1080p kills the RS issue too. 120fps is much sharper than the A7s slowmo. And if you shoot stills, the NX1 is the better choice except, of course, for high ISO's. The speed of the 16-50s really helps to keep the ISO down too, having f/2 on the wide end gives you a lot of light gathering ability for a zoom, only outdone by the Sigma 18-35.

Another firmware update is on the way. I'm excited to see what Samsung has up its sleeve this time. AF improvements are rumored, and the AF is already amazing for a mirrorless. If they can iron out the AF quirks and improve noise/detail at higher ISO's, the NX1 will be a keeper.

Some frame grabs from my latest work.
I used the 85mm and the 16-50 with Gamma DR and all other settings to 0.
Very minimal color correction in post, with just a tiny bit of contrast added.

Very nice. I really struggled with skin tones with the A7s as my grading skills are pretty basic, I'm getting much better results from the NX1.

Here a few other screenshots from a photo and video shoot that I had two days ago.
Again, very little to no grading. I just baked in a warmer look in camera.

The more I work with this camera the more I like it.
A big thumb up for being able to extract stills from these 4k files where I had not time to actually shoot them.
If it wasn't for ND filters, I wouldn't miss neither my old F3 nor the C100!

Talking DR, I think that it's better not to underexpose too much either with this camera, 2/3 of a stop max.
Depending on the scene, playing with curves and levels may lead to visible banding on plain surfaces.
I bet it's not there in the original h265 video, but we're still forced to transcoding.
That's the weak side.
I wonder if anybody tried the NX1 with an external recorder and see if this helps.

Very nice. This reminds me of the look of the C100 for some reason. DR looks solid too. Did shadows/highlights come out of the camera like that?

Yes. As I said, I applied very minor contrast adjustments in post.
Just keep all settings to 0 (sat, contrast, pedestal) and use Gamma DR. I prefer to custom WB always with a slightly cold card to get a warmer look depending on the scene.
Here is another frame grab from a recent job. But this is an indoor shot with controlled lighting.

Does anyone have examples of gammaDR vs a standard profile with strong hightlights at the same exposure value? Id like to see just how much better the profile holds the highlights, if possible.

Do you use a typical "warm card" product or have you created your own?

This particular gray card gives a warmer result. Sorry for not being clear in my last post

Well Diego, your eye and your skills are outstanding.
Next time I get to Italia to visit my wife's family (the large Minghi clan) I must hire you to shoot her.
Wow, did I just offer a guy money to shoot my wife?

Thank you so much!
However I don't think you'll make a good deal. I've been shooting my ex mother in law for years but she's still fine :))
