samsung deck

yesterday I bought a cheapy deck to relieve pressure from my dvx during the import process. however, it only shows a timecode for the footy I've shot in 29.97 format and not the 23.98 format portions of what I've shot. Making it impossible to import any footy shot at 24. Any work-arounds? or should I return it...there's a 15% restocking fee--lame. So I'd loose money and still have to buy another one. Thanks in advance.

Wait a minute. Everything coming off of that mini dv tape is 29.97 regardless of what you shot it in, 24p, 30p or 60i, correct?
What NLE are you using?

you will either have to stop importing and make a new import everytime you change frame rate from 60i, 30p or 24p to 24pa and change your capture settings to 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal only when importing 24pa or you can conform your clip to 23.98 in your NLE.

if im not mistaken the thing with video is regardless of frame rate 24p, 24pa, 30p, 60i your timecode will read 29.97 as long as it is on tape. once it is on your NLE you can have true 23.97, but if you transfer back to tape the timecode will go back to 29.97 so if you would like to edit in 23.98 you must shoot in 24pa and remove the pulldown during the capture process

that's true--and I'm on final cut 5.0.4. it's the samsung that actually gets no timecode and again it's only for the 24 footy I've shot. even if it's on the same tape as 29.97 the tape will only show timecode for the 29.97 portion and not the 24fps portion. if that helps. This is before the NLE has any contact with the import capture.

try changing the device control in the capture window to "non-controllable device".
