Sample of work ive done with the HMC150

Fidel... in giving you some constructive feedback.. here goes and I did watch the whole thing.

Overall you have some really nice images and nice pieces.. but I think you have it too lumped in together. I know that I have several different reels. One for editing, one for my DP stuff, and one for directing/producing. WHen you lump it all in.. then there's nothing cohisive tying it all together and you end up getting more of a series of selects than a reel. It's just too many things in one piece so I'd suggest doing one for each.

Also your piece is way too long. A reel should maybe be 2 minutes at most... 2.5 minutes if it's killer. Your editing is way too loose and should be tightened up quite a bit. Get to just the quick and don't set things up so much. Also I'd say to try and juxtapose a lot of different things together and have it make sense by the editing and how you structure it.. So you can have one piece with a character saying one thing.. doing one thing and then a totally different thing answering it... or sounding off. So I'd say that you need to make some choices.

Also.. some of your shots were really nicely done.... and others I wouldn't include at all.. IMHO. I like the stuff with the guy with glasses and that nicely composed shot in the movie theater looked like money. I wouldn't include any of that band stuff as the shot falls apart and it's not a very pretty looking stuff.

The other major thing is your sound mix and overall sound levels. If y ou are going to have dialogue you can't drown it out with music... or just simply cut the narrative completely.. or cut the music in parts.. You audio levels are also really low and pretty bad in spots.. especially that doc style interviews.. Really hard to hear that. I wouldn't say to showcase anything that has questionable production value.

Overall looks like a good rough start... especially since it looks like you might be in High school or a young guy right? It does kind of have a bit of the HS look and feel, which isn't bad because that's where you are at.. I'd say just to definte things a bit more and don't try to have one piece be representative of everything.

Like.. for me.. I have to send a client a reel.. But rather than doing one reel I'm sending 4 different pieces which each showcase one of the things that I do. They each stand as better representations of each thing that I do.. and would be hard to find one piece of that did it all.. as something would be compromised in doing that. So on my DP reel.. It's 2 minutes of a variety of things I've done.. and most clips are 2-3 seconds with only a few Money shots being 10 seconds. There's pace there and I want to leave everyone wanting more...

cheers and keep it up and this was all said as to be constructive and it's just my opinion so if you don't dig it.. then that's cool brother.

thanks alot justyn, i agree completely with what you are saying. A lot of that stuff i saw myself, but originally I was just ganna throw some clips together to show some friends some of the stuff i had done, and it ended up turning into a "reel".

oh and u have a pretty good eye, for I am in high school and a lot of this was selections from projects and shorts i have done there.

yeah essentially it was just a rough little cut, i put it together one day in the afternon while i had some free time. But i hope to construct something i bit better in the near future.

thanks for the criticism.

Fidel... Glad to help and I wish that I had a HMC150 when I was in highschool. You are getting a headstart and if you keep this open and friendly attitude you'll glean from others... make strong relationships in the biz and get to do what you want to do.

Are you planning to work in the biz? Go to film school? Etc. Cheers and good start for sure. Back when I was your age, I was shooting on 3/4 video and doing linear editing on a sony editor. An absolute nightmare.. and if it wasn't that, then it was shooting and editing film.. Which really really sucks. I'm not one of those people who would ever want to cut film ever again. I'll gladly shoot it.. but only edit after it's been converted to digital or something..

cheers
