Same Firewire GUID?

Hi all,

Has anybody else found that their HD-100s have the same 64-bit Firewire "globally unique ID"? Our project has received two, and they both appear to have the same GUID: 0x0080884f4f000000. When we plug both into a Macintosh at the same time, it refuses to talk to either. (We are able to use both cameras at the same time with Linux, which seems to be more tolerant.) I guess it is rare for anybody to want to use multiple HDV cameras at the same time on the same Firewire bus, but it's disappointing that JVC would violate the Firewire specification, if indeed that is what happened.

In other news, we've found that some of the DV long-distance cables (like Datavideo's, at http://www.datavideo.us/products/cables_main_page.htm) do not work with the HD-100 in HDV mode, because even though HDV only 19.4 megabits/sec, the Firewire chip the HD-100 uses in HDV mode tries to use Firewire's 400 Mbps "S400" mode, which those long cables aren't rated for. We'll test one of the Firewire-over-UTP extenders next week to see if that works.

I am very interested in finding out about firewire cable length limitations (with or without repeaters,) so please keep us posted. I would like to utilize firewire while shooting for HD monitoring and digitizing straight to a laptop.

Okay, will do. FYI, I have had no trouble using a 15-foot legitimate Firewire cable, and also no trouble with 15-foot and 6-foot cables joined with a repeater (a total of 21 feet). The problem has been with the 66-foot "DV" cables that aren't rated for the full Firewire 400 speed.

Also, the delay on the Firewire output at 30P is roughly 10 frames (1/3 second), so it takes some getting used to if you want to use it for pulling focus.
