Sam Rami's Warcraft

As a fan of the games, and the rich lore, I can only hope that they seriously don't botch this movie by basing it on WoW. Raimi, while a good director in his own, cult-driven right would not have been my first choice for this film, but being that he's onboard and he's not Uwe Boll, I can sigh with relief. Not to mention the author of Saving Private Ryan is doing the script!!

Another problem I see, is that with AVATAR now rocking balls with blue dudes, flying dragons, and floating mountains...they may have to change some of the visuals to avoid being called "come lately." I remember reading the release where they announced the film, and Legendary stated that it would be a "300" style shoot with real people against completely computer genned backgrounds, but that was two years ago, and we've obviously come pretty far since then.

All I can say is that if it's done right, and not made solely to cater to fans of the game...it's going to rock. :kali:

This reminds me of the Halo series. If they ever get around to making a live action film about it, then it will be based off of many different elements of the greater fictional universe created for the games to take place in.

I think the games with these larger worlds beyond the game itself are the ones that stand the chance of being successfully adapted to the screen.

I'm growing kinda tired of the whole 300 or Sin City "let's-just-shoot-the-poo pooer-on-greenscreen-and-call-it-a-day" madness that is taking over. I think for those two films it worked great because they were going for a very specific graphic novel look. Actually, they were going for a Frank Miller graphic novel look, which is different from many other comic book artist's styles. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed both films, but it could also have been great to see a fully live action and more realistic depiction of the Battle of Thermopylae.

Greenscreen and CGI aren't magic wands that can be thrown on any old film. I think this type of look where everything is an obviously stylized composite background plus ridiculous amounts of extremely gritty color grading is going to get stale real fast.

Of course, something like Avatar is a different beast altogether due to the time and cost it takes to create visuals that believable looking in a CGI world. I don't think we'll be seeing too many films with a mega-budget and long production period like Avatar as the norm.
