SAL 24-70 zeiss. AF & adapter questions

I am thinking of buying this lens, but have a few questions:
1. Is there any benefit of using the la-ea2 adapter over the la-ea1 since the lens has a built in SSM?
2. What sort of noise will this lens emit when autofocusing (never used an SSM). I currently use a tamron 25-78 SP Macro 2.8 with la ea2 and it is VERY noisy.

3. Will this lens be supported if I mount a QR plate to the adapter foot and partially underneath the FS100's mounting plate?

Does the LA-EA1 support AF with the 24-70? I thought that (on a lot of lenses) it didn't support AF at all.

I know for sure the LA-EA2 adds the (much lauded) Phase Detect AF - which is really sweet.

Not sure what you're describing, exactly, in your 3rd question; can you elaborate?

The main benefit of the la-ea2 adapter is that it enables you to use auto focus, unfortunately with some limitations.
My advice to you is to go to a camera shop and test both adapters and see which one works best for you

If you want to use AF, LAEA1 ism't going to work well. LAEA1 uses CDAF AF and even SSM DSLR lenses don't work well with CDAF system.

You'll want the LA-EA2 with the 2470z. It's a lovely lens. The focusing sound is pretty quiet, as quiet as SLR lenses get, but not as quiet at the dedicated emount lenses. The iris change is pretty smooth and quiet too. The LA-EA1 won't focus at all with the FS100. I'm not sure the new firmware allows for iris changes on the LA-EA1 either, but i could be wrong. I had the LA-EA1 on a Nex 5 camera before the 2.0 firmware so i've not really used it with the 100 properly

I have the adapter mounted to a QR clamp underneath which i hope takes some of the weight off the cameras mount. The lens is about a kilo. Having said that i've seen plenty of photos of FS100 (even from sony) with the lens on and no support. I know the plastic of the FS isn't the strongest but i hope the metal cage inside is pretty good.

cheers

Thanks for all the feedback, I guess I was under the impression that the phase autofocus would work with the la ea1 based on some things I've read, but it makes sense that the laea2 is necessary for this function.

I have the LAEA1 and the SAL 16-50/2.8 and it throws up a message every time I bump the AF switch or the push auto button - says the function is not compatible. No AF with the LAEA1. I decided to save the extra $250 because I couldn't try one before buying and I really wasn't sure how well the AF functions on the LAEA2. Can you track moving subjects? Will it stay locked if something is coming toward the camera? I hate the look of the slow-assed AF hunting, makes it look like my grandma's crappy VHS-c camcorder. I'd rather just continually tweak the focus manually.

But honestly, with peaking, I've been able to nail focus really easy - much easier than with my Nex7 or any other video camera. The 16-50 is on my camera about 75% of the time and the rest is just adapted Rokkor primes. I'm amazed at how easy it is to do focus pulls with the FS100, so much better than with the 5d2 that I was using before. Its so easy, I'm ditching my follow focus, external monitor and a bunch of rigging I used with the 5d2 to attach everything. I just don't seem to need it. I'm loving the FS100 so far.

I feel that the la-ea2 is great if you only shoot stills but not so great for shooting video. It does a good job of tracking a single subject walking towards, away or across the camera but if you have subjects walking in different directions, the auto focus will be hunting all over the place. What would have made this adapter extremely useful is the push auto function, which if used smartly would avoid the hunting issues. The push auto function works well when you are not recording, but whilst you are recording you will have the issue of exposure change and a clicking noise. The exposure change happens because the camera goes into auto mode (auto shutter speed) and will set the aperture to F3.5

I've seen videos of people using the LAEA2 with Nex5n/7's and it looked promising, but I haven't seen much of it in use on the FS100, or the VG cameras for that matter, while shooting video. In the end I passed on the SLT box and just went for the smart adapter, no regrets.
