just heard from my actor friends the vote is in
sag and aftra are merging

How this affects us - all those non-sag actors you know that are aftra? well they are now sag

From what I have heard - if you have a production already started then you are okay

One question I have - does that mean that all the agreements that SAG signed with the various guilds, are they now operative for the ex-AFTRA members? Because AFTRA also signed agreements with guilds. So whose agreements take precedence? If it's all-SAG, all the way, then it's not exactly good news for some no-budget indie producers. SAG makes it hard to hire actors unless you have oodles of cash. AFTRA was a bit more flexible. If the AFTRA option is off the table, it's sad trombone time for some indies... fewer options, fewer productions.

I've used sag actors on deferred contracts and I don;t have a problem with that. Fine for short films and festivals. But for really small projects. Sketches and skits and spec stuff for the web it becomes a pain. Currently its 5-6 weeks turnaround on a contract at best. Some of the things I'm doing are done and online within the week.

If the unification of the unions means that their New Media (online) departments gets galvanized into high gear and is prepared to meet the changing landscape then yes great its agood thing. Before today AFTRA just didn't care what happend online and SAG had a new media department that was swamped with work.
