safest way to attach Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens to AF100???

The other day I tried attaching my heavy Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens but quickly detached it after noticing how much strain it caused on my AF100.

What is the recommended setup for safely attaching any heavy lens to the AF100?

Possibly a silly question, is there a recognised standard for rod systems i.e rod diameter and spacing, so one support will fit another companies system, or is it different for all systems.

I agree that simply hanging the lens off the body is not ideal. The reverse might be better. I did find that the 70-200 2.8 L IS II + foot fits perfectly into the camera plate slot on my Sachtler FSB-6, so basically, it's directly supported by the fluid head. Pretty cool :D

Lens support system is the only way to do this safely.

Hanging the body off the lens is a terrible solution for many reasons.

eg. off-film plane axis point for pans and tilts, vibrations, difficult to change lenses, still stresses the mount, difficult to level the head and the horizon...

Rods and systems are standardised around 15mm and 19mm rods.
