I wouldn't lump American Idol or any other competition based shows in with the rest of reality TV. They are just hyper dramatized game shows. They have a slighter degree of honesty because of the competition aspect. Generally, talent wins over other talent in a somewhat fair contest. This is all relative of course to the other reality shows, which claim to portray the "reality" of someone's life but are actually contrived from top to bottom. I'm speaking as someone who has experience editing both kinds, first on a competition based show, then on a slice of life show. The second show was so contrived compared to the first it left me feeling pretty icky about my part in it.

I agree but I'd also go further to say they are ALL game shows, with perhaps the exception of candid camera (a clip show) and things like Gene Simmons Family Jewels (documentary with no point and all the boring stuff left in). If there's competition and/or a prize, tangible or otherwise it's a game show. All game shows cut their footage down from a longer shoot to keep it interesting and the energy up.

True, would agree with that. Though I think there's a big difference between a show like Surivivor, and what NBC did some 20 years ago with Survival of the Fittest.

But yes, anyone wanting to to get into this business really should have to read this thread.
