Sachtler's new "Revolutionary" tripod

Dan, I don't believe the Miller Air can be separated from the ball, correct? I find flat base heads way better, plus they can be melded with a bowl base for the best of both worlds. I use a tripod head on a monopod and slider a lot, and a flat base makes it way more ergonomic and usable for those setups. The Really Right Stuff has a great quick release flat base system, which is the other appeal to it other than it's somewhat light weight and likely quality smoothness.

That is true, it is only a 75mm ball head. I use other heads for monopods and the slider but I get wanting to do everything with a single head.

What are the two counter-balance settings ? I can't find any details of what the actual counter-balance weights are for this head.

Miller's specs list 4.4 lbs and 11lbs wth no qualifications about how those figures are derived or applied. Since I used the Zacuto VCT Pro baseplate system with a Zacuto VCT Plate, my camera is always on the heavier side and the 11lb setting works great.

Would love a set of Sticks that could easily fit inside a carry-on sized for international flights, & not exceed Airlines' weight limits, especially those operating in the EU. Also be great if the head could be quickly detached like RRS'.

Imagine there'd be height, & weight, restrictions, but I'd likely accept these for the peace of mind that the Sticks will arrive at the destination, & if need be a larger set could sent as checked baggage.

With the advent of lighter S35 cameras, & mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, it seems there would be a market for a quality solution that catered to the traveling professional.

I guess there are just physical limitations on how you can construct a tripod. You can make the sticks only so thin or thick And keep the integrity and stability of the whole set up. Going smaller usually means using photo legs; and I always wonder how people deliberately choose to use those . How do you adjust your tripod with a loaded camera when you have to twist to vary the heigth?

I would like something that weighs like my DV4 tripod but has the speed. of Sachtler's hot pod (quickly raise lower sticks with push of one button).

Thinking the carry-on tripod solution may be custom ordering as set of legs from RRS that are cut a bit shorter. They offer a Series 2 tripods that measures 19" collapsed, but the Leveling Adapter with Arca QR adds a few inches. If you step up to Series 3 there's 75mm Bowl option, so may inquire about cutting one of those so the overall length in 19", & picking up their Fluid Head with QR base.

Have other financial priorities, & but it's my wish list.

Anyone else getting tired of the daily (or almost daily) emails from Sachtler, all full of testimonials but devoid of real information?

Frankly, it's all making me less interested in the thing. I wish Sachtler would just stop until they're ready to show the tripod, announce price & availability, and let us know if it's something each/any of us want.

Those emails from Vitec/Sachtler are starting to feeli like spam...

What I want to know is how Vitec got my e-mail address. I don't even buy Vitec products as I'm against conglomerates monopolizing the industry. I like to support the smaller companies like Wooden Camera, Litepanels, Manfrotto, and Vinten with my purchases so that those big Vitec companies quickly go out of business.

My guess is they got your (and my) email address by renting lists of email addresses from perhaps B&H, StudioDaily, Provideocoalition, NAB, etc.

You know that all four of those companies are owned by Vitec, right?

Or are you saying you're bummed that they're no longer independent?

My understanding is that counterbalance specs usually do represent a standardized positioning of the center of gravity, at least for Sachtler I think it's usually listed for the COG centered at 55cm above the plate.

Yeah, most of the big boys(Vinten, Sachtler, O'connor, etc.) usually give you a graph that shows the weight(s) that the head can counterbalance given the payloads COG above the head. It's usually a sliding scale. The lower the COG, the heavier the payload the head can handle and conversely, the higher the COG of the payload, the less weight it can handle.

I have an amazing old Sachtler Video 14 head "made in West Germany" and a beautiful set of Gitzo super tall carbon fiber legs with a 75mm bowl adapter. Breaks down to fit in my luggage or leave it together and use a tripod bag. I often team it up with my Fiesol carbon fiber kit which is also super light and works with another old Sachtler DV head. I recently bought two Sachtler Ace adjustable base plates that I have grown to like very much.. All to say I have these hybrid setups which work well with my lightweight cameras like the Z150 and A6000's and the A6500. But I am open minded and look forward to seeing what all these emails I have been getting will deliver.
