Sachtler Video 14 counterbalance problem

Hi,
I just bought a used Sachtler Video 14 mk II and I think the counterbalance is not working correctly because the tilt position wants to very strongly spring back to center so it fights against you when you try to tilt. I've used different Sachtlers before and they don't do that, they stay where you point them. This is an older model so I don't know if that's just the way it is or what. It has a knob to adjust the counterbalance tension but it only has two settings and there doesn't appear to be any way to disengage the spring that I can see.

Does anyone have any experience with this series of heads? Is it broke?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Erik.

I have the exact same tripod and mine does the same thing. It's supposed to. I hate to tell you this, but it isn't designed for small cameras. The weight range is 15-33lbs. With a 7 or 8 pound camera, the head will be VERY stiff. Unless you attach a 35mm adapter, lens, wireless mices, monitor etc., you'll need a different head. My DSR130 tips the scales at about 19lbs with everything attached, and the head works pretty good. I'm looking at picking up an EXR1 which weighs around 7lbs, and will have to buy another tripod.

Cheers

Craig
