Yes that is the one. A lot of people swear by the 503 head just ask Jarred. And John hudson loves the legs with his 501 head. Depends on your budget. But for run n gun I still may pick up that set up. 8)I was also going to add a ball leveler to this set-up it is about $80.00 I think. 8)
Yeah.. its good to me. I shot a feature a few months ago in the middle of nowhere where we needed transport to get into and our camera carts couldnt even make it to some setups. We had 2 dvx's, one with the 503 combo and a Sachtler with a 2 stage. The sachtler was a pain in the ass.. the legs as much as everyone seems to praise them are only good if you keep them around head level, leveling them is less than easy, and the spreaders.. dont even get me started on them.. (ok ok, ours may of been broken). We had a 1st and 2nd ac, and I felt sorry for them
after the end of the day.
The AD even kept bugging the other operator how crappy his $5000 tripod was. Granted, you cant beat the actual fluid motion of the Sachtler once its setup.
I have only used the medium/large Sachtler's, I imagine the small DV ones may kick ass. I hope its better then those cartoooni DV heads.
Oh I forgot to add one very important part. I was also going to add one of those ball levelers that Bogen makes to the Wilderness / 503 set-up. It is about $80.00 I belive. 8)
Well so far so good with the Sachtler. Seems like a perfect match with the DVX. I love the instant on drag system. It is like a gear engages and smoooooth pans and tilts The adjustable balance is cool also. my camera stays put instead of fighting a spring. The spreader I have to say is kind of a pain. But I think I will get used to it. And it has single stage legs so set up is real quick. It weighs in around 13lb. Mostly head weight. Very Very Happy! ;D
Which ball leveler were you going to add to the bogen wilderness legs/503 setup? Can't seem to find it on the B&H site, this is my setup & I'd really like to pick it up. Do you have a link saved, by any chance?
DrHST. It wasn't your standard ball leveler . it was designed to use on a tripod that was not a ball type. I saw it for the first time last month at the Video Expo in Burbank. Call Rush over at EVS he should know. Anyone???? :-/
I would of taken better notes at the Expo if I had known that little ball thingy would be this hard to find. And Ive seen it! The Sachtler is sweeet! but I think this other combo is perfect for the run n Gun club. "B" camera I'm thinking. 8)
