S-Video vs Composite

S-Video also doesn't do well for longer runs. 50' may be pushing it. Composite, on the other hand, can run for a much longer time before you need to add a distribution amp in the line.

Once you go full HD and run everything HDMI, you probably won't need the compenent cables. However, if you find some cheap enough though (www.monoprice.com will have them cheap) they're good to have just in case you add some equipment that doesn't support HDMI.

Batutta also brings up a good point. If you get a receiver that ouputs HDMI and converts all other incoming signals to HDMI it makes hookups and adding equipment a lot easier. 1 HDMI from the receiver to the projector and everything else just runs to the receiver. So you could plug in composite, s-video, and component calbes into to the receiver and leave the other end tucked away, waiting for equipment to be added later.

Note that not all receivers with HDMI convert to HDMI, many just switch the signals internally without transcoding formats. So make sure if you go that route, that the receiver actually does do the active format conversion to HDMI.

I don't even have a working vcr anymore...

I will say, my dad had an uprezzing dvd player (60 bucks) before he bought a bluray player... My bro and I and all of us were there one Christmas, and he brought his PS3... I noticed a clear difference in the quality of SD DVD's being played through my dad's player vs. being played via the PS3... This was onto my Dad's 46" 1080p HDTV.

Anyways, the PS3 clearly did a better job of uprezzing than the regular dvd player did.. Of course, it ought to since it cost 6 times as much or whatever :)

VHS to an HD projector, huh.... new title for you :)

In defense of Mr. Brennan, I feel compelled to point out that you can actually buy a Blu-Ray/VHS combo deck from none other than Panasonic... :undecided ...so VHS apparently isn't completely dead, it's only mostly dead... :D

I'm guessing even this won't send the VHS signal through component or HDMI, though...
