s-video out with Vegas 5?

Ok- I also got my S-video going out to the TV... I would like to know- is this really "TV" - meaning is this how it looks on a TV or is this the bad "computer setting on TV" that is often mentioned? I've seen TV as monitor and it looks bad. This seems different. Since it is S-Video, I'm thinking it has been converted to the needs of TV vieweing???

According to Nvidia's website, their video cards output an NTSC signal via S-video. I couldn't tell you which hardware will make a better signal conversion -- the video card or the Pyro.

Craig, I have an S-Video Out on my Nvidia video card. I use it as mentioned above to put the preview window on a TV.

David, is it really worthless to try to do color correction this way? My video card is outputting a TV signal, not a IEEE 1394 signal through Vegas. The whole setup is independent of Vegas. I can put Windows Media Player on the TV display, etc.

Yes, it really is worthless. It doesn't matter what your card is putting out (and yes, my card has an S-video output which remains untouched to this day); Vegas thinks the preview is on a computer screen, not a TV screen, and acts accordingly.

Perhaps "worthless" is not the correct word, but "unreliable" certainly is.

Hmmm, that sucks. So for my own curiosity's sake, I'd like to get to the bottom of this situation. So at least I know what new toys I need to buy ;)

Vegas assumes its preview is on a computer monitor, which is RGBa color space. The video card converts this signal to NTSC and *something* is lost in the translation. What is that something? Is that even the problem? I'm an IT guy, so I like to know specifics. (if you don't feel like going into detail, i'll take your word for it)

All of this begs the questions: Is there any way to configure the preview to accomodate this form of output? Is this method better than nothing at all? What is the most affordable solution for us/me?

We all know the importance of color correcting and the inadequacies of our computer monitors for that task. Are there other methods using the scopes to get there? In other words, is there something I can do with what I have?

Hey, thanks David, for your help. I can't tell you how much I've learned from you. We're all lucky to have you -- and guys like you -- on this forum.

If you have a TV, I'm not sure why you're not just previewing out through firewire to begin with? Is it because you have no cam to go through?

You could conceivably put a "Computer RGB to Studio RGB" filter on your PREVIEW window, and then that would affect any color correction or filters you put on your clips and affect titler colors and whatnot -- anything which would appear in the preview window. . . that COULD (and I stress COULD because I've never tried this and I'm merely theorizing and I don't really know if it will work) approximate (and I stress APPROXIMATE even if it DOES work) the correct colorspace for the preview window to be on your TV.

It honestly never occurred to me, with the S-video out on the card and all. Never thought of it, I don't remember reading about it anywhere. Another great "Ah hah ... Duh " moment for me.

A'hem, so that works good, eh? Thanks!

Ha! Yes, mine remained untouched too ... until one day I decided to touch it. I wanted to see if it could somehow be used in the mix. I'm getting my DVX soon- (right now I'm editing/cleaning up old material on Vegas) So I'll go the Firewire route. Thanks to all!
