s-video out with Vegas 5?

My video card on my computer has an "S Video" out. Can I use this with Vegas 5 - to view a TV monitor? (Yes, I've tried and I can't- but was hoping someone here could!)

I have an ADS Tech PYRO A/V Link. I tried using that somewhere in the mix- but it didn't work out. Is there a setting in Vegas I'm not using?

(sorry my first post is so lame)

I'm not sure, but I think vegas wants to use firewire as the video out. In my setup, I use the firewire port to drive an external deck connected to a monitor.

You should be able to configure your video card's software to "dual view" and set up the second monitor as a TV. Check your card's settings. Then just drag your preview window to that display (TV).

Yes, I thought Vegas wants firewire as the video out too. But since my computer has the S- Video I thought I'd give it a try. Should I send firewire into my PYRO A/V Link- then to TV?

I've tried duel view settings. It seems I get nothing from this s-video out. I'll look into it again. I guess I need to tinker with the computer more than the Vegas.
Thanks!

No, that’s not acceptable. The signal going to the preview window is meant for a computer’s RGBA space, not a TV’s.. You will not get an accurate preview and it will be useless for color correction – to say nothing about the TV not being able to handle the resolution.

Yes, that is what you would want to do.

David, Diamond member, eh? Snazzy.

Using the dual view method, you wouldn't "preview on external monitor" through Vegas. Works for me, anyway.

yes, that's what I was thinking . I do want to see my work on TV - but as a TV would show it.

I've tried going from TV- into the PYRO A/V Link, then S-video out into S-video in (on video card)and it hasn't worked. Any settings in Vegas I need to sort out? I get color bars but no image.

Yes, I've looked into that- but nothing came of it as far as my s-video hook-up. Maybe I'll forget the s-video out and try the firewire to PYRO A/V Link instead- though I think I've tried that before with zero results.

Someone had a problem recently with their firewire connection and solved it by moving the card to a different PCI slot. If setting up your monitor via Pyro doesn't work, then that may be an option to try. So how does it work? Your video device is set to OHCI 1394, the firewire is connected to the Pyro, the S-vid out of the Pryo goes to the TV?

options I've tried:

1) The TV goes to the Pyro, the Pyro goes to the computer via s-video (s-vid in video card)

2) The TV goes to the Pyro, the Pyro goes to the computer via firewire (firewire port)

3) Begging 1) and 2) to work.

I use the Pyro to capture older footage I have on VHS tapes and it works fine. But I can't get Vegas to run through the Pyro to the TV.

Does the pyro have a "direction" button?

I had a canopus box that was similar and it had a button that switched from firewire in to firewire out so that you could change from importing to exporting. Check and see if your avlink has a similar button.

The Pyro has RCA, S-video, and firewire 4 pin in and RCA, S-video, and 1394/firewire out. It's a very simple design. If I could get Vegas to reach the Pyro, I'd have options of how I hooked up the TV- go in with RCA cables or S-video.

I can hook a TV up to the Pyro and watch as a VHS tape goes through it, on it's way to being captured. But I can't get the computer to play back into the Pyro and show me what I've edited on Vegas. Right now, when I hook a TV up to the Pyro- I get color bars.

BTW, thanks for your help ... or attempt to help. I haven't explained this very well... and I'm sure I'm totally missing the nature of Vegas settings as they pertain to external monitoring.

Have you tried: Computer firewire to Pyro Firewire input on the front panel (using 6-pin to 4-pin cable), Pyro S-Vid out (rear panel) to TV.

No, I have not tried this. That could work. I'll need to go and pick up that cable. So the 6-pin firewire from the computer is sending the Vegas project out ... and into the Pyro- then on to the TV. Do I need to make any changes in the Vegas program concerning monitoring?

You may need to change that video device setting. i would imagine to the OHCI 1394 one...

You'll need that 4-pin to 6-pin cable if you want to connect a miniDV camcorder, too.

For the sake of clarifying: the 4pin/6pin isn't really any different. 6pin firewire just has two extra pins for delivering power, but the data transmits along the same 4 pins as in the 4pin connector.

You just need to make sure to match up connectors, as most computers have 6pin and most devices use 4 pin. There's no difference other then the connector type.

ok- this looks like the best idea. I'll give it a try.(still not sure what to do with that s-video jack on my computer's video card.) Any body else have that (and use it?)

thanks y'all!

Craig, I have an S-Video Out on my Nvidia video card. I use it as mentioned above to put the preview window on a TV.

David, is it really worthless to try to do color correction this way? My video card is outputting a TV signal, not a IEEE 1394 signal through Vegas. The whole setup is independent of Vegas. I can put Windows Media Player on the TV display, etc.
