F55: S-SLOG3 vs. S-LOG2 -- can you tell the difference?

Please go back and read my post again, I never said they weren't ready for HDR. I shoot RAW with my F55 and R7 everyday. I own a FS5 and FS7. So I know perfectly well that the cameras are very capable of HDR. But I don't need HDR. My clients don't need HDR. Nobody is asking for HDR. I don't have an HDR monitor. I don't give a rat's ass about HDR today in July 2017. Yes, HDR is someplace down the road but it is not even on my radar yet. So if YOU are working with HDR now then obviously my opinions about the merits of S-LOG2 or S-LOG3 don't apply. But I'm a little more concerned with my own needs than someone elses. :-)

Also, even though many of today's Sony cameras are capable of HDR, all of them, as far as I'm aware, still clip S-LOG3 after 93%. As I said, that might not be true for future cameras but it is very real limitation of the cameras that I own and use today. Obviously the next generation of HDR cameras are going to have better DR than today's so maybe they can make better use of S-LOG3.

The bottom line is that I prefer to address today's needs with today's cameras and today's workflows.

We are not talking about a fiction or futur cameras. With 14 stops with s2/3 both the FS5/FS7 are ready for HDR today.

Not really Slog3 is pretty thin and give basically the minimum flex to make a rich 709 file IMO. To deliver 10bit one should surely look to shoot in at least 12 bit?

Didnt Sony come up with Slog3 as an almost direct copy of Arri LogC.. (which is a direct copy of the old Kodak telecine log Cineon) just because so many post people were used to that curve.. thats why it exceeds the DR of the Sony and Arri cameras.. it wasn't built for them in the first place.. but I guess is some sort of future proofing.. And the Slog3.cine combo as an easier color space to manage that the huge and green spiky one.. I think thats more the reason to shoot Slog3 for general freelance shoots, when you hand over the footage.. so the grade doesn't get cocked up.. and the .cine is bigger than DCI anyway..unless there is anyone on this forum having their work projected onto 70 ft screens and possible Oscar nominations .. I dont see what the fuss is about ..? your lighting kit is far more important ..

I'm sick of tests like, "can you tell the difference between X and Y?"

Most of the time I can tell the test is designed to trick you. It's made by people who think they're clever.

They don't work in the real world.

I just go with what looks good to me.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And btw, I'll have you know I'm a Philip Bloom certified cinematographer who has watched the entire online course and bought the DVD too!

So there, mofo's!

(Edit: for people who are dense to sarcasm-- I'm kidding about being "Philip Bloom certified". Don't be ridiculous--I would never degrade myself).

I have tried to suggested a ratio here, in which situations slog2 could be used and when slog3. I do not care much about if one needs rec709 only (what will be a majority at the moment), or if one goes for HDR by now or for both. We are talking about a technical transfere function only, but not so much about emotions or the actual market requirements.

Funny enough, there are HG-profiles suggested by Dough Jensen. I think these profiles are great for rec709, and I use that if I do not want to spend a lot of time with grading. But HDR is here NOW, and to grade for HDR is possible today. For me it is fine if someone does not go for HDR today - but it is fair enough to include HDR grading in our discussions too.

Thanks for sharing, but you can please unable the download option so we can download the original fine without Vimeo compression? Many thanks

No problem, you can download it now if you want to. But be aware that it was already compressed to H.264 before it was uploaded to Vimeo so you still won't be seeing the original file.
