F3: S-log2: coming to the F3

I brought this up over a year ago when we heard of slog2 on the f65. The speculation was the f3 couldn't handle such a gamma profile, but with its availability to the fs700...I'm opening the possibility of it coming to the F3; if only a change in the gamma curve to better match to slog2 gamut cameras.

I haven't heard of it and I honestly wouldn't count on it. Sony's resources are now all directed to F5/55/65 and tweaks to the FS700. I suspect no more development on F3. I could be wrong and as long as I still have my F3 I hope I am wrong. Will do some snooping and report back if I dig up anything.

Could it make much of a difference even if it were an option? SLOG-2 footage from the F55 is really hard to distinguish from SLOG footage from the F3 IMO.

I don't expect anything out of a manufacturer. If Sony rather do updates to a lesser value 700 than the F3, what would stop Sony from introducing a new lower value FS55 and abandoning the F55 owners?
The F3's resale value has dropped so drastically ever since the F5/55 were announced that as long as 1080 is what my customers need I'll keep the F3.

Look at the effort on F3 firmware release, efforts there seem to have declined.

Regardless, I don't think slog vs slog2 isn't big when being graded by professionals.

Way back when Peter at Sony had told me that they were devoting all the attention to the F5 and F55, that they didn't have the extra engineers to develop for the F3 until that was done. After that they came out with v1.5 announcement for the F3, which became the v1.45 firmware instead.

If we're really waiting until F5/F55 development is done it will be a year before they think of the F3, if at all.

The Odyssey bundle they are currently offering for the F3 is nice if there was further support, but without it?

Slight correction-- that is a Gemini bundle offered with the F3

Ned

I was going to fix that but you beat me to it, Ned. You're entirely right.

A $16k package for the F3, hard case, Gemini, battery, charger, cards, and both the PL adapter and an Optitek CPL-1 adapter for Canon lenses. wow.

Since the Gemini is about $5k, the case is $500, CPL-I ($1k?) cards, battery and charger $1k that puts the F3 at $9k new. It makes me wonder if they're just getting rid of their inventory of cameras that have stopped moving.

I imagine so, I can't imagine many people are buying new F3s when there are C300s and F5s (with broadcast-ready recording codecs) available in a similar sort of price bracket.

Wow, that's a hell of a deal. 4:4:4 60p 1080p with 13.5 stops of DR... that's a lot of mojo for under $14k.

Further up the scale is the new Alexa HD offer that Abelcine seem to have an exclusive on. The Alexa HD body is "only" $30K, but if you want to deck it out with all the fruit, it's around $65k.

Maybe this could be an Arri response to the F5/55...

But as someone earlier said "I'm sure it's great but I wonder if its not a little late to the party..."

If you can get a working Alexa body pkg for around $45K, it's not at all late to the party. There are a zillion folks out there shooting Alexa and couldn't care less about 4K.

It had been maybe 9 months since my last job with the Alexa, but after shooting with it saturday, I fell in love with it again. Only thing wrong is my shoulder is sore (because the adhesive on the velcro'd shoulder pad gave out in 109º heat)

Just looking again at the fine print, by the time you add the viewfinder, bracket, high-speed option, batts, etc. you up into regular Alexa price-land anyway. If you are going to spend $60K minimum to get an Alexa HD kitted out, you're way above a F55 budget anyway. But I'd still love to have one.

Right. I'm trying to figure out how EVF, bracketry and cards add another $35K to the price. I'm very familiar with traditional Arri pricing (I've had a few multi-K Arri pieces over the years), but I'm still a little stumped...

[edit: ok, I found the discrepancy:]

Update: Alexa HD Body Only is $30,300 but must be purchased with (1) AR-800301 Arri ProRes Codec Option, (1) AR-800300 Arri ALEXA SxS Module, (1) AR-800302 Arri Quicktime File Format Option

So the deal is that the $30,300 price I saw earlier and was commenting on is not really the price at all for just the body. It's $30,300 + $13,708 in body modules and software options. So the EVF + bracketry + AKS are another $20K+ instead of $35K, which makes more sense.

All said and done though, you can get a complete low-hour Alexa EV package for $42K-ish, so while the move from Arri is welcome, they just seem to be stemming th tide of used EVs flooding the market while owners upgrade to the XT.

I read the Abel page more carefully and the $44K price reflects the $30K plus the required options. Starter kit adds another $21K bringing it to $65K. Still more than F55 with 4K recorder. But I believe they will sell very well.
