crushed blacks everywhere - added a lot of saturation. this is for all those who think s log makes your footage milky white.

we went s log vs 709 because we wanted to incorporate the nature into all the shots. so the extra stops helped us. also we wanted more natural looking colors.

and since it was a crew of three, we had no time to gel the windows and the most powerful light was a joker 800 so we were always on the verge of underexposure. but sometimes underexposure is beautiful.

Fantastic!! That shot with the old man with the window on the back truly shows the beauty of this camera... You could still save a bit of the blue sky with such a shocking difference of interior and exterior light intensity... just WOW!

ok stupid question here
how do you capture s-log? on sxs? is it directly a s-log file or do you need an external recorder?

To capture s-log, you need at least a 10 bit 4:2:2 external recorder. I used the KI Pro Mini - take it out of the SDI port. The PIX 240 and the Samurai, once available, will work as well. So does the Gemini and the Cinedisk, which is 10 bit 4:4:4.

When you go 10 bit 4:2:2, you can't unfortuately also feed the hd sdi port with anything but s-log, which looks milky and desaturated. What I learned to do, the indie film way, is just crank up the saturation on the monitor to nearly 99 and turn down the brightness and it gives a very good approximation for what I can get the image to look like in post.

So you can't come out of lets say SDI a to the Ki Pro and the SDI out to monitor?

I haven't been able to send a feed from the dual-link 3g SDI ports to the KI Pro Mini successfully.

so i go out from the HD-SDI link to the KI Pro Mini and then from the KI Pro Mini to a monitor.

Sounds to me like a software update wish list candidate.

Edit: Thinking about it and after seem some 422 Slot maybe Sony didn't want you to record 422 Slot.
