S-Log question

If u can afford a F3, Kipro, and log, u can afford a monitor that accepts LUT's.

Use it, its really as simple as that. The HDlink box that does LUT's is another option as its so small, you can velcro it to the back of the client monitor, and have that handle all the "look". Its $500. You're shooting LOG for 16000.... it will pay for itself in 1/2 a camera rental, and you can use it for any monitor. Just load a standard 709 LUT, or something that delogs the image that's just basic and call it a day.

Hi Timur,

I see 2 models of HD link. Which one are you referring to? I read descriptions of both a few times and yet do not really understand the differences between the two. Which one is appropriate for F3 if one is not shooting 3D?

How do you program in the LUT's for HDLink and can you copy from someone else's, share over email etc?
Do you have to create them from scratch ? and how do you change them when using the HDLink, is there a menu button or do you need to be connected to a laptop?

a waveform! you never expose by the "look" of a monitor whether it's corrected to rec.709 or not

So you just expose s-log the normal way. It sounded like there was some other issue from the previous discussion. I guess I'll just have to play with it when I get s-log in my clumsy mitts. :)

The biggest difference in those two HD link models is DVI/HDMI out vs HD-SDI out. Do you want your client to monitor with a computer monitor/widescreen TV, or a professional studio monitor?

I beleive I was the first person to propose that the Blackmagic HDLink might be a LUT monitoring solution for those of us shooting F3 Slog via 422 recorders.

I placed an order for one, and should be able to report on the experience in about a week.

I ordered the DVI model, although, I beleive they all offer LUT support, it's mostly different I/O configurations.

There are no buttons, to switch LUTs, you need to attach a laptop via a USB cable to alter configuration settings. But, between configurations, settings ought to remain stable. Meaning, if you just want to set it with a REC709 LUT, you don't need a laptop every time you turn it on. I'll have mine soon, and will test these suppositions for accuracy.

My proposed workflow is to feed the F3 dual link output into the dual link input on the HDLink, and output via the single link SDI. Feeding out the DVI is another option, and feeding out an LUT (REC709) image over DVI and the orignal SLog image over SDI is but a third option.

My understanding is that since you're connecting a laptop to make the changes, you can save LUT files to the computer, and therefore they could be exchanged with others. It comes with a couple preinstalled. I'll test them when I get mine.

Someone help me out here please. So, in order to use S-LOG and ki-pro mini, you need to use the HD-SDI out of the camera, correct?. The duel link A and B wont spit out a signal?

If that is true, you need to turn off the display out on the HD-SDI so you are recording clean video without camera status info.?

If that is true, I have a big issue. 90% of the work I do has a scripty taking notes off the video village moniter. Will I have to tell a producer I can't provide time code info to scripty?

nooope, neither have LUT'ed sdi out. the sdi out on both is a loopthrough. One model is an 8-bit dvi out, other is a 10-bit displayport so you can connect it to your 10-bit work panels like your dreamcolor, u2410, etc. displayport actually carries dvi/hdmi over it as well, with a 10 dollar adapter you can have an hdmi/dvi port off of it. I believe both models cost the same. If that's true not sure why anyone would really ever go with the DVI

its included software allows the use of standard 1d/3d luts. It includes one for panalog and one for panasonics log mathz if I remember right. You can create your own from scratch or you can just grab sonys standard s-log to rec.709 LUT and import it into the software and onto the box. then you disconnect your laptop and take the thing out for a day of shooting

Fohdeesha, I beleive the loopthrough SDI does support the LUT. From page 8 of the HDLink manual (http://www.blackmagic-design.com/media/9767/HDLinkManual.pdf):

"HDLink supports the use of LUTs to adjust the appearance of video on your monitor and optionally on the loopthrough
SDI output."

On page 10 an image of the Settings Menu is shown with an option for "When a lookup table is used, send to all video outputs."

And, on page 11:

"When a lookup table is used, Send to all video outputs.
This option sends the effect of any lookup tables to all HDLink outputs. It is useful for inline color correction of an
SDI signal as the effect of the LUTs will be seen on all SDI, optical fiber SDI, DVI/HDMI and DisplayPort outputs
of your HDLink model. If you want to leave the SDI output unchanged, and only apply the LUTs to the attached
display, leave this option unchecked."

What are the physical specs - size & weight and what do you need to power it? I see its 12V but could you do it with say a sony NP=F970 and a 12V adapter ?

Oh wow, you think they'd want to advertise that on their site! I might be picking one of these up now, especially with simultaneous lut'ed displayport AND sdi...$500 bucks for an SDI to displayport/dvi/hdmi 10-bit box with color transform capabilities and 6ch audio breakout is a pretty sweet deal, considering aja charges close to 500 for a simple sdi to hdmi converter.

as for power, feed it 12 volts from anything. I doubt it draws more than half an amp.
