S-Log for Vimeo output

Now that ver 1.3 firmware is about to be released, I am asking myself if this purchase makes sense to acquire S-Log, since I have an external recorder (Samurai). My problem is that even without S-Log I can make what look to me very nice on my computer videos in Prores HQ which become nice .264 videos after compressor on my computer but not so nice once uploaded to Vimeo or Youtube. If I could make even better videos with an F3 and S-Log, will it translate into these delivered video players? I am already uploading quite large files which play great on my iMAC (1GB for 4-5 minutes) but the compression that Vimeo uses does not do them justice. If the internet is the ultimate customer, does S-Log make sense?

S-Log gives you a stop or so of dynamic range and by-passes the Sony color matrices. Thus, it allows you more latitude in grading and in determining your ultimate look. Vimeo is still going to compress the same way. Firmware 1.3 really changes nothing other than the ability to record a clean 4:2:2 s-log from the A SDI port while allowing you a viewing LUT from the SDI or HDMI port. I suppose that your decision should be mitigated by the need for greater dynamic range and the look which you desire to create.

I currently am using the picture profile provided by Abel Cine "Range" which seems to grade well in FCP. Thanks for the insights, probably will get it just to see what I might be missing.

Why dont you rent it first just to see if it works for you. Worth it to me, but make sure before you drop $$$

I just found this on Vimeo, a thread started by Vimeo themselves about this problem: The thread is http://vimeo.com/forums/topic:46866

Hey everyone,

Some users have observed that the colors in their videos change after uploading to Vimeo. We realize that this is a real issue for many of you and we want to do something about it. Before we do, though, we'd like to get a better understanding of what is going on here.

Have you experienced color shift in your videos after uploading them to Vimeo? If so, please post below and explain how your video's colors changed.

Once we compile enough information, we are going to take steps to correct the problem so that your videos' colors stay as true as possible on Vimeo.

Thanks!
The Vimeo Staff
