S-log and recorder for feature

Hi all,

I'm shooting a feature film next month on the F3 and am quite excited about it. I've read on the S-log gamma curves, but am still confused about what can and cannot be recorded from it. I don't think we will have access to a 4:4:4 external recorder for that film, but I will definitely push to try and find a 10bit 4:2:2 recorder. Up to now, the nanoflash was booked as our recorder, but I really think I'd like a 10-bit codec that will give the production more room to play and make changes in post.

Am I right thinking that?
Considering that I will not have a 4:4:4 recorder, is shooting S-Log still an advantage (mainly looking at dynamic range here)?
Is there a way to record S-log in 10-bit 4:2:2 through SDI without any LUT applied to it or is it only a Dual link feature?

Thanks for helping me figure this out.

Also, what are my choices of onboard external recorder with 10-bit capability?
It needs to be onboard since there is quite a bit of Steadicam work involved.

Thanks

I would definitely advise a 10-bit recorder. Right now, the choices are pretty slim; a Ki Pro Mini is about the only option that does SDI and 24PsF. Others have been announced (Samurai and PIX 240) but won't be out in time. You can also look at options like the BMD Hyperdeck Shuttle or the Convergent Gemini.

If you are shooting SLOG, 10bit recording is a must.

The 10bit 422 output will do just fine.

you can also rent or buy a Cinedeck which is available now. and it will give you all flavors of codecs. prores 4x4, uncompressed, or cineform.

Can anyone confirm that the Hyperdeck Shuttle works with the F3 because I heard that it currently has some problems with the FS100?

Thanks everyone!

Finally, the camera we're getting has not been S-Log enabled, so I'm gonna stick with the nanoflash since we're getting a good deal on it.

I will HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest you still use a 10bitrecorder.....

The F3 still puts out 10 bit, and it will give you such a better grade in post. The difference is staggering especially when you take advantage of the grainless nature of the F3.

You can under expose and protect highlights, then boost it up later with no noise penalty.
