Can someone tell me what the advantage is of using the color mode S-gamut on the a7s is please? I guess what my question is, does the colour mode affect the dynamic range that this cam is able to shoot?

Thanks in advance...

It doesn't affect dynamic range as dynamic range is the difference between the brightest and darkest illumination that can be recorded - luma information. S-gamut is a larger color space that sRGB or Rec709. The human eye is capable of seeing a very wide range of colors and the sRGB color space is rather limited in comparison but can produce most commonly seen colors. The s-gamut color space is larger and can produce a wider range of colors so if your final display can handle a larger colo rspace it will be able to produce more colors and a more lifelike image. If your work is primarily displayed on computers or mobile devices they operate in sRGB so there will be no real benefit. I believe most TV's are Rec709 which is basically the same as sRGB so no benefit there either. I believe there are some TV's now that can support larger color spaces and there is also film and DCP that would benefit from it as well.

So short answer for TV and internet video not much benefit for theatrical release there is some.

Check this pdf for more information, it is not for the A7s but the information is still valid in concept.

Do you know how much more colours sgamut will hold vs sRgb?

So if I were to benefit from using sgamut then I would have to grade before applying a lut. Is this correct?

I would use sgamut if you are using an slog2 LUT since LUTs designed around slog2 will likely be designed around sgamut.

^ that.

If you're not using LUTs, avoid sgamut, it has some serious issues (a strong skin tone shift depending on brightness, which can be a nightmare to grade and creates yellow splotches in people's faces).
