I was already rather impressed by the dynamic-range exhibited by the RX10 II. However, after bringing it into After Effects and pulling down the highlights by 2 stops, I was even more impressed. If only it were 10bit. Regardless, pretty amazing for the price and form-factor. Gives me high hopes for the (possible) BSI based "A7000".

Anyways, here's the original shot, followed by a shot with the highlights pulled-down, then a slighted graded, de-noised, and re-grained version:

This camera (and the RX100 M4, with the same guts) is astounding. I'm seeing roughly 10-12 stops out of it (?). Not sure scientifically but it absolutely cuts flawlessly with A7RII, A7S, and FS7 footage at ISO 1600 and under. It's that good. At least with the contrasty scenes I have tested thus far. And I have all the subject cameras at the moment to test: A7RII, A7S, RX100M4, FS7.

I'm absolutely blown away for a pocket camera. The only thing that really hurts is the overheating.

The RX10II does not overheat? Interesting! I was afraid to chance buying it after the overheating with the Sony A7RII in 4K. Plus the A6000, etc overheating.

I just tested the RX100IV for the first time yesterday at an event. I shot at 1080, 60P, Slog2 and it shut down from overheating at about 19 minutes. This was outdoors in the sun, as a 3rd camera for fill, but I was still disappointed. I was hoping it would be a better 1080 camera. I guess I wil try dropping SLog2, then try 30P??? It shut down pretty quickly and hard, with not much warning at all.

I also shot a Panasonic FZ1000 for the first time. I shot that at 4K, 30P, CineD, at 100 Mbps. It ran for 1 hour 25 minutes with no overheating! It completed that on a single battery, then I shot some additional B roll on the smae battery and it showed 60% when i was done.

The RX100 was hand held on a Zacuto rig. The FZ1000 was locked down on a tripod in the full sun, at around 88 degrees, at 3:00 pm in the afternoon. I was pretty happy with the results from that standpoint!

I bought the FZ for about $640 as an open box. The RX10II is about $1,250 here, still at list price.

I would prefer to stay with 1 manufacturer of course. I already have a Sony A6000 with a smallish lens kit, with about $1,000 invested in Sony lenses. But it looks like any other Sony 4K device really still requires an external recorder, so there is no simple / portable kit. :(

The FZ1000 is no where close to parfocal. I was able to focus at 400 mm and zoom out with a reasonable semblance of sharpness. Going in the opposite direction is almost impossible with the degree of focus change, except for very short zooms. But with 4K I can also do some pan and zoom in post (although I always prefer to get it "right" in camera whenever possible - I'm more of a photographer than a graphic artist.) :)

The FZ1000 would make a great supplemental camera for a Panasonic 4K kit.

Cheers.

do you guys think the rx10ii is better than the ax100?

I believe so, I had a play with an AX100 some time ago , and wasnt that impressed. Been shooting with my RX10 for over a week and loving it so far.
I own both the AX100 & the RX10M2. The AX100 is a proper camcorder with no recording limit. It shoots very nice 4K footage & has great stabilisation & a 12x zoom (albeit not constant aperture). If you want & need a camcorder the AX100 is better. If you want & need a stills camera the RX10M2 is better. As a run & gun lightweight no fuss carry anywhere camera I would choose the RX10M2.

Agree 100%.
I own both as well and I wish sony could make a camera with the RX10 II sensor and log, mounted in the AX100's body....with a constant aperture f2.8 lens.
My complaint about the RX10 is that the zoom is completely useless when recording, as the image wobbles. It's more a variable prime.
