I think Apple's falling behind the curve on that one, too.

Software integration is much different than hardware. No one forces you to buy software, and adobe is OS independent. But apple forces you to buy their hardware to use their software.
I'm sure it is, but I don't know of any company (other than perhaps Sony) that pursues it with such an aggressive exclusionary attitude. Most companies seem to see nothing wrong with having their hardware work with whatever everyone else makes, or to have their software work with everyone else's. Apple seems to be trying to create a world where their customers won't even know that other manufacturers even exist.Isn't that every companies goal though?
MS obviously has had problems playing well with others. Sony, as mentioned, who's just about the king of "proprietary standards" won't give editors access to the HDCAM codec unless they run a Sony Xpri. Avid's hardware only works w/Avid's software. Adobe's sweet integration in CS3 is obviously a big incentive to not use non-Adobe apps. Matrox makes some cool stuff but it's all PC only except for the MXO. I can't take the DVCPro HD tape I shot and play it back in anything other than a DVCPro HD deck (same for my Digi tape, or my JVC HDV 720p tape, etc.,).I'm sure it is, but I don't know of any company (other than perhaps Sony) that pursues it with such an aggressive exclusionary attitude. Most companies seem to see nothing wrong with having their hardware work with whatever everyone else makes, or to have their software work with everyone else's.
I don't think Apple is any more or less company town than other guys. Apple is just doing a helluva lot better of selling their stuff and generating mind-share than the other guys right now. I'm sure every company would love to have the charisma of Jobs, the vision of Ive, and the fan base Apple has. Heck, look at the success Red has had going down a similar road. An out spoken, charismatic, self-made leader introducing sweet hardware w/ eye-catching industrial design at unheard of price points going head to head w/the giant corporations that have dominated the industry for so long.Note: I'm not saying their products are bad, and I believe that a large portion of their success is obviously due to the fact that they do make great products. But I also don't care for that monopolistic attitude, it's a bit too much "company town" for my taste, that's all I'm saying.
In reality, I wouldn't mind really if they had OSX available for any hardware, I just would still use Apple Hardware.
Apple doesn't make their own hardware. They don't design the cpu chips, they don't manufacture the harddrives or graphics cards. But they do work with other companies to make sure their software and OS run perfectly with the hardware they choose to use in their systems.
Have you opened up a mac lately? Where does it say made by apple on all the components?
