Running Scared

Don't you mean The Fast and the Furious? Paul Walker wasn't in XXX. I couldn't stand either one of those movies. Even if the acting was better I can't watch those movies...

Yes yes yes! Fast and Furious! But XXX sucked so bad it just seems like Paul must've been in it too. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

man, i don't know why you guys don't think this movie is going to be good. the visual style is what i've been wanting to do for a long time. very cool stuff.

I went and saw it, it's pretty good... definetly entertaining. but no award winner.. . the visuals and cinematography were great. story was a little week but still one of the better movies I've seen lately. Unfortunetly it only made around 3.5mill this weekend getting hammered by tyler perry's family reunion.... (aka bigmamma's house 3)

Saw the movie. Wasn't bad. As I suspected, the big sequence they keep showing in the trailers is really the only big moment (save for a few small ones) where that attention to detail and style is really present. I mean, it's impossible to make an entire movie like that and it be interesting (plus it would be wayyyy expensive). That gets you into it and then the story has to take you from there. Still, it was a really cool sequence.

The movie is good (some beginning of movie spoilers) except it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I mean Paul can't let them find the gun that shot the dirty cop cause the gun will ID him (and his partner in crime). But the cop who would "I.D." him was in the room during the shooting. So he's already ID'd him cause he's SEEN him! The writer might argue that the cops need an 'official' way of IDing him (hence their need for the gun). But these are dirty cops. Can't they just make something up? Frame him?? Doesn't that sh*t happen, oh I don't know, like EVERY DAY?? And doesn't Paul have a retlatiation anyway? If he gets taken down, can't he just tell the police that the cop is dirty and that would therefore deter the dirty cop from taking him down? And if he couldn't do that because the cop is too strong and/or the entire department is dirty, couldn't the cop, like I just mentioned, by virtue of this extreme power, frame these guys??

That's just the beginning of the confusion. Once the Russians and methane gas get involved, it really gets weird. I wish these types of movies would come with a dislcaimer. Something like "this is one of those movies that doesn't totally make sense. But all the scenes are really cool. So don't think too hard and just enjoy yourself." Or "this is a movie where, if you add up the details, it actually makes sense in the end. So pay attention." That way we'd know whether to tune in and pay attention, or sit back and enjoy ourselves. I spent most of Running Scared not knowing which to do.

I cannot believe the last few comments, from people who have seen this, arte saying that this movie is "okay."

This movie is NOT okay. This movie is the reason VIDEO GAME plots are bad!
If this is the modern action movie, COUNT ME OUT. Everything is post post post, nothing is about the actual reality of the movie. I am starting to think After Effects is ruining cinema. RUINING it.

Editing has become an addiction for these people. They get in there, they start cutting, and they Can't stop!

This movie represents Everything I think is wrong with digital technology and the modern approach to cutting movies. It's like they went "HEY! Look at all of these filters I can use!"

And it's not even ONLY bad because of the BS cutting. It's bad because a lot of the moments in the movie don't even belong there!

That poor kid did SUCH a good job in Birth too. The director just said, "hey that kid can act without smiling. Let's do it again."

Sure Paul Walker is bad, but this movie is WORSE than him. I laughed for the first hour, then I was just pissed off.

The only good thing about this movie is Vera Farmiga -- who played Paul Walker's wife. She did a great job with a terrible and ridiculous script, and I cannot wait to see her in The Departed. She was totally connected the entire time -- which seems absurd when looking at what she had to do --
(Spoiler: The Pornographers!?!?!? WHAT!?!?!)

This will probably go up on my list of worst movies of all time. It is a disgrace to the genre of "bad action movies" I have come to love.

I am hoping Kiss Kiss Bang Bang will be the action movie genre's saving grace, if it ever becomes available to the general public.

I hope you meant video game based movies, not video games. Because right now there are lots of games with far more interesting and inventive plots than those featured in 90% of the stuff you see in theaters. But even if that is what you meant, I don't see your point. Why is this one crappy movie the reason for the crappiness of some other flicks?..

What I meant is that this plot IS a video game plot. Through and Through. Stock video game characters from start to finish.
Play GTA, and any of those games, and you'll get the same quality writing. The same type of BAD writing.
The same cheap-azz twists and turns because in video games you always need a "next level," and a "next boss" to beat. NOT in movies.
Because, in video games, you aren't into them because of the writing -- just the gameplay.
The fact that a character in a video game isn't very thought out doesn't matter, because you are going to kill him yourself anyway!
But with movies, writing plays a hell of a lot larger role.
What I mean is that movies should be BETTER than this. They should be thinking about character and plot instead of just "the next boss"

I think video games should be better than that too -- but I see the reason they have taken the turn that they have -- and I respect it. And I love it.

LMAO! yeah XXX sucked big time too. so did its sequel... *shivers* sorry just thought about how bad those movies are

Ummm Metal Gear Solid?

The same cheap-azz twists and turns because in video games you always need a "next level," and a "next boss" to beat

I think you're describing a symptom of bad writing not necessarily the medium of video games. There are plenty of movies that feature these traits and I never think of video games when i see them.

That's what I was saying, Machinist.

MGS, Fallout, Knights of the Old Republic, Silent Hill, Broken Sword, Baldur's Gate, F.E.A.R, you name it... There are many games that happen to be more interesting, exciting, moving and actually cinematic than most of the movies nowadays.

Oh man, guys. You are reading way too far into what I'm saying here. I wasn't speaking for ALL video games -- only games that can be related to THIS movie. And if you're telling me you watched this movie and didn't ONCE think of GTA or another similar game, then I guess we will never agree.

I'm sorry, but excluding of the exceptions you've just listed, XL, you've got to see where I'm coming from in terms of the "BOSS" structure of this movie!! The pimp, the hooker, the pornographers, the italians, the russians!!!

Maybe I should've specified the GENRE of video game, but come on! You're nitpicking! It was one sentence in a series of endless criticisms of this movie.

And Machinist, sure there are movies that have the "next boss" mentality, but they didn't rip their dialogue from GTA like this movie did.

You guys don't see where I'm coming from At All?? Or are you just arguing now.

I actually didn't watch this movie. Nor will i ever. The trailer was enough to tell me that I would think its a P.O.S.

That and Paul Walker. SAG should really send him one of these. :banned:

and if you read the original statement:

"this movie is the reason video game plots are bad"

this means that the reasons that the plot of the movie, and the bad plots of bad video games are BAD for the SAME Reasons. Maybe that isn't clear enough. But that's what I mean.:)

The director looked at it as sort of a Grimm's fairytale.

Here's a pretty good interview with him regarding the film:

hope that link works.

I get the reference to this movie resembling a video game. It has every cliche character you could think of and goes way over the top... but i still loved it and gladly went along for the ride!

Yeah man. It was definitely a ride. I think moreso than the writing the cutting just bothered the hell outta me. But that's just the style I am hating so much that a LOT of other people seem to be really getting into. So there ya go.
Okay, I've hogged this thread long enough.

Can I have some more please ?

The useless frenetic camera movement and insulting camera/post work is the reason I got angry during "Domino". The director was spanking his own monkey all across the screen. If Tony Scott was sitting in front of me, I would have kicked his chair, knocked off his pink hat, and we would'a tussled. When the press asked me why I did it, I would have said "Somebody had too".
