Running Docu Trailer

This is just a quick and dirty job of putting a trailer together with a fraction of the footage we're hoping to have for the final product. We started shooting the HVX200 in early January.

The documentary is a profile of five elite runners, and their competition at the US Cross Country Nationals in Boulder next weekend.

I'm the DP and editor. Also, Van Blumreich, another DVXuser shot the marathon race footage in the trailer.

There are some good shots, looks interesting. I really liked some of the shots of the runners w/ the fast shutter speed towards thing beginning. My only criticism is on the narration, the voice is a little too much, and overdramatic for my tastes. Kind of reminds me of the trailer for The Comedian a little bit.

Thanks for the comment. I think the narration is a bit over the top too, but the director really likes it (he comes from a sports writing background, and loves dramatics).

The main part of the story is coming up this weekend, and so we're filming with the HVX and the SDX900. This iteration of the trailer is to raise interest in the project, while we continue to film, with almost 50% of the project still left to film.

everything's great except for the interview of the guy with the glasses. the background is in focus, but he isn't. the narration isn't the greatest either. i think the shots were pretty amazing though.

The voiceover guy is actually talented - just wrong for this project. He would
sound great saying, "Coming up on next on Fox - HOUSE"

Did you use any add on lens? or was it just the HVX200 standard? Those shots were incredible . What was your workflow like? Thanks and keep up the great work.

Hi Michael,

We were justing just the standard HVX200 with FS-100 for this project. The workflow was direct to FS-100, offloading to external USB drive via my macbook pro each night, and then editing on a dual G5 in FCP. We've only been burned by one issue, and that is a spanned interview that lasted about 45 minutes that the P2 importer can't import, and all the workarounds I've tried have failed. I'm hoping that there'll be a fix for the problem, because we can't re-shoot the interview.

I was sort of hoping nobody would notice that :) The first part of the interview with the author of that book was very rushed. We didn't have our lighting kit because the bag was lost at the airport. Add to that, it was snowing and couldn't find the author's house, which was on a mountain. Anyway, it was rushed, and I didn't catch the focus issue until about 2 minutes into the interview. I wish the viewfinder in the HFX was about twice the resolution, so it would make it easier to focus (this has been the biggest downfall of using the HVX200 instead of our SDX900.)
