Run & Gun Audio Capture - Boom or Pistol?

I'm doing some run & gun audio capture with double system. GH13 and GH2 for the video (and sync audio) and Sound Devices for the audio (mixer/recorder). If it's more guerilla-style doc work, would you suggest using a boom or a pistol grip for the shotgun/hyper?

I have a boom right now and it has worked well, but it's akward and I can see it being a pain in tigher spaces and long days. I was thinking with completely separate audio (not hooked to camera), it might work to use a Rode blimp with just the pistol grip and be a lot more maneuverable for long shooting times. I have also used wireless G2's when the boom is not possible, but the sound isn't near as good as with the shotgun.

Hand-held pistol grip isn't going to get the mic into the action like a pole will. That's pretty much the deciding factor.

Besides, if you do find yourself shooting in, say, a broom closet where it's just too tight with camera, sound, and crew... you can always take the pole off (assuming that you can get the mic where it needs to be with your arms).

Thanks Alex. Good info.

I can't believe how much better the audio sounds out of the separate audio vs. in camera. It's always talked about but you can't really understand until you have the same audio side-by-side in a few actual situations. Appreciate the help.
