(Rumored) Panasonic FF mirrorless

On the other hand, if they could best my 5DMKIII which I have been waiting to upgrade for stills work I would be first in line to buy two. But I am unsure of their flash system (if they have one).

I think there's also an element of long-term thinking. I doubt the S1 or even the S2 will come out on market and completely take it by storm. But there is a long term game of incrementalism when building out a platform for the next 20 years, and if in the next 5 years a superb collection of L mount glass and effective adapters can be built that will be a huge win. And I don't doubt it will be. Sigma and Leica are two of the most exciting lens makers on the planet and they actually fit both sides of the spectrum very nicely - Sigma for an incredible quality/price ratio, Leica for that superb top end. As for Panasonic, we'll see what they bring to the table but if nothing else they can be an effective way to fill in the gaps.

But with a short flange mount and good adapters, the door is opened to virtually any lens out there.

With Sigma making bodies in addition to Panasonic, and with AI auto-focus in its infancy, this really could be a key strategic move in the long-term. You have to start somewhere.

One thing is for certain, the strangehold that Canon held on the market for a while is over.

I agree with your thinking. It will be interesting to see what they come up with. I always get the sense the M4/3rds still cameras are stuck in a certain range - size limited and somewhat quality/price limited. A $4,000 M4/3rds camera would go over like a lead balloon but with FF the quality level can be pursued a little more given the higher price ceiling. It will really come down to the sensor.

One thing is for certain, the strangehold that Canon held on the market for a while is over.

It's never over...just may be dormant, or idle, or ignored for a bit...but consistently selling something regardless.

Too big to stop...just how it is.

[I love all camera companies.]

We'll see what happens with this one and I am so excited for Panasonic.

But as I preach and many others, it's all about the $$$ for everyone at the end of the day (good or bad), always.

You've worked with the camera?

Nope. I am just going by Panasonic's lineage of still cameras and sensors. They have had a history of noisy sensors compared to the big three. I do not believe they can catapult up to flagship territory with one release. With my experience around the still shooter crowd - they are ruthlessly picky as a bunch. If the S1 really gets priced above a 5DMKIV and can not best it with the pixel peepers it will be discount city. I think the video crowd is way more forgiving in comparison.

No, not what I said at all. Are you looking for an argument? The video crowd does not pixel peep and tear apart cameras like the still crowd does imho. Not that they have lower standards. Panasonic makes great images.

That was hilarious, and it makes so much sense if in fact dvxuser.com isn't a forum to talk about camcorders, it's a den of professionals ready and willing to argue about anything and everything at a moment's notice

And, in conclusion, IBIS. Did I say IBIS? Like really good, Sony-shaming, IBIS, on a full frame camera*. Yes. Please.

(* assuming it lives up to the GH5 implementation).

Haven’t used Sony’s IBIS but seems Panasonic may have difficulty matching the performance of the GH5’s with a sensor that’s four times as big. Also imagine rolling shutter performance may also take a hit.

Hate the design of the S1/S1R’s LCD, & wish Panasonic had stayed with the foldout design of the GH5. And added a tilting EVF!

As dSLRs are replaced by MILCs there is an opportunity for Panasonic to grab a chunk of the market, especially with Canon’s anemic mirrorless offerings, but they need to come out ‘swinging for the fences’, & if the S1/S1R is just another 8-bit offering with non-linear fly-by-wire lenses I doubt I’ll be adding it to my kit.

If they do ‘hit it out the park’ the S1/S1R will be exciting products, & I’d be thrilled just to have an EVF with proper focus tools on my stills camera, but add in that it’s a hybrid, & Panasonic may well get my $$$.
