(Rumored) DJI Mavic Pro II

Your house may have spirits and the obstacle avoidance system is detecting them.

You don't know just how right you may be. I've been saying it since I moved in here almost 18 years ago. Lots of people that have stayed here, have said it, too. My GF has some pretty cool cell phone video from several years ago. Some of our dogs were going crazy in the bedroom looking at "something" and she started shooting it. On playback you see some faint orbs of light popping in and out and moving around in the frame. Camera anomaly..? Did she catch something real..? They say dogs can see in parts of the spectrum that we can't with our own eyes, like UV.

If you're wanting to adhere closely to a "180 shutter"(even though 1/50 is as close as it gets to 1/48) when shooting 24fps, you'll still need ND. Even stopped down to f/11 and ISO 100, during the day with the sun out, you will still be well over 1/100.

Well yeah, Sunny 16 rule...

Wow! Need to visit your place. :)

The Mavic Pro 2 came on Friday. I took a quick shot of it. Just used it quick, very happy coming from the Mavic Air so far.

Im curious, we hired a Part 107 pilot yesterday to shoot some drone for our documentary and I was impressed with the footage, especially some of the shots we got over the water flying into Avalon with the Casino and the boats. Have you shot the P4Pro? Is the Mavic 2 better, equal or worse as far as image?

So far I'd say the Pro model at least is a lot nicer than the P4 image wise. The color is beautiful... ought to integrate nicely with Helium footage.

It's heavy -- I can't play it back smoothly in Resolve on my laptop (Scratch, of course, has no problem playing it back), but it grades almost as well as ProRes HQ.

Thanks, that's exciting to hear.

I'd exercise a great amount of caution before judging anything based off of YouTube material. And I'm not talking about the image compression or anything like that—we all understand that here.

The goal of many YouTubers seems to be to upload as much material as possible as quickly as possible. I don't see how that can be compatible with careful examination or contemplation. There are many examples of videos where the shooter didn't even realise how the focus system works or what some best practices might be. The Mavic Air saved many clips, I'm sure, by being fixed focus, not inviting user error.

Anyway, there are skilled users out there too of course, but man... some of the people that get early access... WTF is wrong with companies today?

I come from a Mavic Air and upgraded to the Mavic 2 Pro. My main reasons were actually more the practical stuff: better range/reliability between remote/drone, less noise (as in quieter operation), more sensors. Obviously, the larger sensor, Hasselblad optics, variable aperture and 10bit log are nice features.

I just got my Mavic 2 Pro and I have only made a single "let's check that everything works" flight. NDs are not available in my region yet, and I think they are an important addition in order to shoot at the drone's sweet spot and get some natural motion blur where desired.

Feel free to study the following shots. These are UHD HQ mode (crop) in 10bit Dlog-M, but based on the Standard picture profile setting. For full size images use the Google Drive link. The ones here are resized and compressed. On Google Drive there is also an untouched .png frame grab that you can grade yourselves.

Most of the reviews seem to be nothing more than clickbait.

I've been wondering that. You'd think that they'd want their early access users to be able to show the new products in a good light, eh?

I was wishing for NDs during some of my flying over the weekend. :)

I've only been using DLog-M, and so far I've been pretty impressed with the quality of the footage. I shot a few stills over the weekend as well that I'm hoping I'll have time to process in Phocus later this week.

Sorry I only have used the Mavic Air, not the P4Pro. I use this for my business for inspections and the quality is better then the Air and made much stronger then the Air.

So far I've just shot on the "normal" profile, 4K(really UHD) 24P, .MOV, h265 and in the "full FoV" and I've been impressed with the color and level of detail, especially compared to my MPP @ 1080. The detail retention in the sky/clouds has been one of the nicest surprises. This is based on playback on my 15" RMP on VLC

Mine's been frustrating the hell out of me. The intelligent flight modes are... flaky as all hell. Active track in particular is basically crap; it more often than not doesn't do any tracking.

I got it working once, and attempted to repeat it with a slightly different angle on the actor, and instead of following it parked itself like an idiot and panned + tilted, which made the take unusable. Today I put it in active track mode, and instead of following my subject, if flew itself sideways into the hillside, and ruined the aircraft; the proximity alerts didn't go off, the drone didn't follow the subject, and the gimbal's now hosed.

Precision flying is basically impossible right now. It refuses to budge when I try to make it move slowly, then abruptly springs into far too quick motion to follow anyone. Since active track usually doesn't track anything, it's essentially useless for things like follow shots.

Next up will be my experience with DJI's customer service.

The image quality is very good, but not useful if the drone won't let you get the shot. And so far, other than flying it around for b-roll, it's mostly useless. I'm very frustrated right now, especially since it just trashed itself because its "intelligent" flight mode completely failed to do its job. I hope DJI customer service is decent.

Yikes, sorry to hear that. Seems like you are paying the "early adopter" fee in hassle and trouble. DJI drones mostly seem to work pretty well, maybe you got a lemon?

That sucks, man. I've had some instances where I actually thought the proximity sensors were a little too sensitive. I've played with the auto tracking feature a few times and it seemed to do OK, but it was nothing complicated or critical. Just walking around the driveway and yard. I saw some footage from some guys that got one early from DJI and it was pretty damn cool in one of them: making elevation changes to follow him under low tree branches. And another with a guy cycling and it seemed more hit & miss, tracking him well for bit and then losing him and stopping. Still, pretty amazing considering the drone is making these decisions itself.

Hopefully you bought the DJI Care Refresh. I think a complete drone replacement is $119. I got it on my second MPP and on my M2P, after wrecking my first MPP on the first day and smashing the gimbal(RTH kicked in and it shot straight up into some tree branches before I was able to regain control, but then it drifted into branches while I was trying to figure out how to fly it out. Turns out I didn't have to figure anything out after the props hit branches and it plummeted back into my front yard, nose first. Drone was OK, gimbal, not so much.)

That's what I'm hoping. I have a shipping label + RMA certificate, so I'm going to send the drone in for repair today and hopefully get it back soon.

It's been nice when it works, but most of the time it doesn't track squat. And the proximity sensors weren't working... I tried placing the drone in front of an actor to track backward as he was walking out of the water, and between the crappy controls (no motion at all, until it accelerated to nearly full speed in one surge) and not having active track work, and the proximity detectors apparently not noticing the actor walking toward the camera, he nearly walked right into the drone.

I did, and this will be my first replacement under the plan, assuming it needs replacing (which given that there's probably a lot of sand in the motors, fans, etc it probably does).

News so far: the RMA process for sending the drone back was easy. The support app generates an RMA form and a shipping label, you take it to UPS and that's that.

I dropped it off on Thursday last week, DJI confirmed receipt Tuesday, and yesterday I got a notification that it's been repaired under warranty, and got a shipping notification this morning.

So far it bodes well for having a drone that works as promised soon.
