(Rumored) DJI Mavic Pro II

My repaired drone arrived last night. Most of the delay was in shipping, since the repair turnaround was only a couple of days.

It looks like new (no scratches, no sand in the motors, etc). I'll get a chance to test it out this weekend.

Just looking at some Mavic Pro 2 footage from a friends son, he just shot in Hawaii. So far, based upon what I am seeing, def looks better than the Mavic Pro but not as good as the P4Pro. I was going to buy one but I am not a Part 107 pilot and don't want to become one so $2k for the Mavic Pro 2 with 3-4 batteries just seems too steep for a hobby drone. Even though it's not as good, has less range and battery time, the Mavic Air seems like pretty good value as you get the 100Mbps that we all crave for less than $800.00

Was your friends son a good shooter, ideal settings, correct post process?

I haven't seen a ton or looked into this but from what I heard it seemed a given that the Mavic Pro 2 was matching the P4Pro.

Pester him to find out whether or not he was using the DLog-M profile. It's only available with a bit of a crop, but I've been finding the crop to be worth the tradeoff.

I'll see if I can get some sample clips together to share. It's been a crazy couple of weeks. :)

Was not DLog, decent shooter, unedited footage right off of the card so no CC, but I was looking at latitude, dynamic range and clarity as well as smoothness and noise or absence of it. I just finished editing together some P4Pro footage we hired a Part 107 pilot to shoot of one of our races and compared the two. To my eye, straight out of camera, the P4P footage looked smoother and more detailed to me. Both are leagues cleaner than my Mavic Pro but at least straight from camera, the Mavic Pro 2 footage isn't quite as nice as the P4Pro. Just my opinion as someone who has been shooting with my Mavic Pro for a year now.

Check it out again with DLog-M. It's a definite improvement. I can't compare to the original Mavic Pro because I thought the sample footage looked dreadful due to excessive compression, but I can say that I was surprised by the Mavic 2 Pro's image quality.

I set it to cropped mode so that I could record in DLog-M and also used H.265 rather than H.264, for the codec efficiency improvement even though it's a harder codec to play back than H.264. Not that Scratch has any problems with it, though. :)

If I was buying a drone today, I would keep my Mavic Pro for just fun goofing around and I would buy the P4Pro. I am not convinced of the superiority of the image from the Mavic Pro 2 over the P4P, but it's all academic because I don't really have a reason to buy one anyway. But if I continue to hire drone operators for lower end documentary shoots, I am now hooked up with a pilot who has the P4P and I like the images a lot.

^ And I would just tell you not to buy a drone today. With DJI's history... the next iteration of the P4P will probably be just around the corner... with some upgraded type of Hassy camera on it.
I'm glad I've stayed with the P4P and didn't jump for the MP2..

The funny thing... I was on a shoot last week and two drones are actually characters. They use the Phantoms as the "picture drones" for on-camera and were doing some of the actual aerial work with a Mavic Air. I'm sure they do take some of the footage from the Phantoms, but they are primarily for picture, as far as I know. And i Know they were using a Mavic Pro earlier in the year for actual aerial shooting, as well.

P5Pro is imminent from what the rumor sites say.

Can anyone speak to the drone's gimbal?

I've always had issues with my Mavic Pro 1 gimbal (very fragile!). It would not calibrate, twig out, etc.

I am curious how the Mavic Pro 2 is holding up and if anyone knows if the gimbal is improved over the first gen.

Interesting, I have never had a problem with my Mavic Pro's gimbal but I know many others have. Probably helps that I have never crashed mine or even had a rough landing. I've almost lost it over the ocean a few times but so far, fingers crossed.

The gimbal on the 2 is more robust than the original and supposedly much easier to replace if something does happen to it.

I had an incident with my first MPP and broke the gimbal and it was going to be well over $700 to replace it. You could buy the entire drone for like $1000...

The DJI Care is probably a good bet for most. I had it, it expired, then they asked if I wanted to renew it again last year but I think it expires this year. Can't recall if I renewed it for a year or two years?

Yeah... But I didn't buy it with my first one... Live, cry, learn.

You can bet your sweet @$$ I added it on my second one and the M2P when I got it, though.
