(rumored) Canon Full Frame Mirrorless leaked pics

The RF mount lens line up is pretty good, lets see how the pricing goes :(
body features vise dont think it will beat Z6 tho (10bit 4k)

It's an old canon tactic of undercutting a supposed high end nikon announcement with a lower priced competitor. Looking at the controls at the back those are not their "pro" level controls but the 80D level camera. I will guess this will be a bit or more cheaper than the nikons.

Yeah, it's not a "pro" level camera, but everyone pretty much knows that they're not going 1Dx level with mirrorless, yet.

And why is everyone so damn obsessed with the mirrorless cameras being made so small, just because it's possible? 5D sized bodies are great(for actually shooting STILLS). And there are people out there who think they are too small and much prefer 1D sized bodies. I think everyone forgets people still need to hold these things in their hands to use them.

Also, mirrorless lenses are not always significantly smaller and lighter than their DSLR counterparts which often negates the smaller body and lighter weight. All depends on imager size but I was surprised at how large and heavy a friends lenses are for her Fujinon XT-2, those things are heavy. So the body is marginally smaller and marginally lighter. For S35 sized imagers, mirrorless is much ado about nothing in the end. Once you get into M43, then you get the smaller, lighter lenses. But FF like the Sonys? Meh. Those Sony lenses are beasts.

I D sized bodies give a lot of stability despite their heft. Have been a long time user of Canon 1D series and before that Canon 1 Series (films stills). The only thing I miss in the 1DX II is the flip out screen of the 80D.

I use the optical viewfinder of the 1DXII a lot. In low light (wildlife shoots) I watch using the optical viewfinder. When I need to shoot, I just switch press the button and the camera comes alive and I am shooting. I am able to conserve power. My C300 can't do it as it doesn't have an optical viewfinder. Also it takes ages to wake up unlike the DSLRs. Why? Perhaps only the Canon Gods in Japan can answer.

Articulating screen (save the "that's not pro!" flaming, please) and headphone jack are encouraging.

Something interesting about this new R system is that the lenses have an extra ring. My first guess is some type of exposure control. Aperture, ISO, ND... Hopefully it is continuously variable.

A multi-function ring most probably, seems like a great solution, it could serve a lot of purposes. Digital zoom while recording video, for example.

I'm excited by the camera, by the precedent it sets. Seems like a lot of the features it has are gonna be video friendly, hopefully they decided to go all out in certain respects to bring back the Sony crowd. They really went for it with the lenses too, all of them L glass & very unique. A 28-70 f/2? Damn. Plus the 35mm 1.8 IS Macro is super solid, the 50mm 1.2 is a classic but might be updated significantly optics wise and the 24-105 fills out the needs of many average photographers.

I think we all want Canon to be in the mirrorless race but I will not get excited until I see the specs. I (we) have been spoiled by the video features of the GH5 series and Sony somewhat for bring the goods to this segment of cameras. I highly doubt we will get 10bit internal recording from a Canon mirrorless camera. On the stills side, I even doubt if the thing will be considered an equal to a 5D MKIV. Canon is the king of segmentation and that leads me away from their system. I shoot with a 5DMKIII for stills and would be happy to "upgrade" to a 5DMKIV or better level still camera if its video could be on par with a GH5. So far, the combo of MKIII for stills jobs and GH5 for video is tough to beat. I would prefer to have one camera choice so I could commit to two and cover both areas and invest in the same lens lineup. But I will not hold my breath...

Agreed! It will be nice when mirrorless becomes ergonomic. I hate going near the A7. Takes the enjoyment out of shooting professionally.

These are the leaked pictures and specs of the new Canon EOS R camera and lenses. I am curious to hear if you think this is a more serious proposal than the Nikon Z or not. I am actually curious how it did come that both Canon and Nikon had the same idea to put nearly the same top screen on the camera :)

PRO points for the Canon compared to Sony:
– Dual Pixel AF
– EV-6 (wow!)
– fully articulated screen
– top LCD screen
– 28-70mm f/2.0 (wow!)
– 50mm f/1.2
– real weathersealing

CONS points for the Canon compared to Sony:
– no on sensor stabilization
– one card slot only
– likely no EYE-AF
– no joystick
– Canon sensors usually not as good as Sony sensors

This is unexpected: Panasonic will also launch a new Full Frame mirrorless system camera on September 25

It looks like a full frame mirrorless month coming !

Nice to see them trying hard: unlike Nikon (I see their new mirrorless as a defensive product to stop people moving to Sony), this one has stuff that could tempt users from other brands: the AF specs look, spectacular, and the f/2 zoom sounds very interesting.

I have very low expectations on the video side: it will probably match the 5D4, or maybe the 1DX2 if they're feeling generous.

It will be a super popular stills camera.

Regarding video quality, both of those cameras above look the same. The only difference is one has 4K/60p. There are no other essential video features besides C-Log (optional) that differentiates them.

This new mirrorless doesn't appear to shoot MJPEG...maybe something to consider as in that case it wouldn't match either camera (on paper). The improved DPAF sounds great, but I truly can't acknowledge anything else that would convince me to purchase it (and I actually thought it would be pretty loaded).

Per usual - with any of these new releases - it comes down to which features/options you need the most.

I wonder if we'll ever see high-quality 1080p from a Canon DSLR or mirrorless (besides the 1DC...for its time).

The very long specs that have been leaked here include the video details. It does UHD at up to 30fps with all-I codec. No mention of bit depth or color sampling so I guess it's the usual Canon codec from the 5D4 and 1DX2. The only thing missing is whether UHD video is full frame or cropped. But in any case, I'm getting a p4k that does RAW video with a big-enough sensor, this camera won't change my mind. (interesting detail: that 8-bit all-I codec weights in at 60 MB/s, vs 74 MB/s for the p4k's RAW 4:1, which I think is all-I as well)

4K MJPEG didn't end up in the M50 and my guess it won't be in this one either.

The link you give specifically states that the codec is not the same as the 5d4 or 1DX2. The codec is H.264 with choices for intraframe or interframe compression across the board. The HD shooting has the same specs which means it probably has the same crappy video. There does appear to be an EF-s cropped shooting mode which I sincerely hope is the same as the 1DC s35 mode. If the 4K video isn't cropped to 5d4 standards, this might be a good gimbal camera.

The EF-S mode seems like it's only there for using APS-C lenses, which hopefully means the EF mode is full-frame 4K.

This camera doesn't undercut the still cheaper Nikon Z6!
And to boot the Z6 is a better choice for us filmmakers.
