Rumor: Sony A7s will have 4K video

15? I would like that but i don't believe it.
Some recent review have just benched the gh4 to a maximum of 10 , so let's see

It should really depend on how they implement the conversion of the sensor data into compressed video. Even if the actual highlight latitude isn't THAT great hopefully the highlight roll off is done well. 8-bit stuff isn't usually that great for making huge adjustments in post, but the on camera processors can still do a lot.

Sony announce the RX100 III for only less than 900 with new feature like a three-step ND filter (finally yeah!) , an “Intelligent Active Mode” combination electronic and optical image stabilisation, designed to reduce rolling shutter... Whay's the hell i'm tented to say? Why do thing hal way... Can they put these two on the A7s for 2600$?

The rx100 has a smaller sensor and a non-interchangeable lens, hence cheaper (lower filter area) and easier to include the ND filter.
Lots of pixels allow for software image stabilization - you need to crop stuff for this to work correctly; the A7s isn't exactly a megapixel monster.

TBH, the GH4 looks to have a limited DR, the DR of the GH4 certainly looks lower than an FS100 which is 11 and I'm very familiar with that image in comparison.

I guess we've found a new guru here.
Thanks man, you're making me blush :)
Completely undeserved, I'm still a newbie in most aspects of filmmaking (which I try to compensate by knowing my gear in and out, and learning about the tech side of things).

Wonderful! I can predict lots of fun in a couple of months :)
Yessssss. I see lots of a7s vs blackmagic tests in my future. And fun, yes, fun too :)

Honestly guys, i don't truly expect for 15 stops (nor even 14 stops) at all in video terms!
I know, I know. If the comment of "similar DR to my F5" from Den Lennie is accurate, I would expect to have around 10 stops of usable DR, 11 if I'm lucky. That's still HUGE. And with the kind of curves that Sony uses (the image below is the AbelCine test for slog on the F3), it would mean around 29 values per stop of light in the midtones and highlights (which should be just about enough if the codec is good) and half as much in the shadows (which can be a problem even with a good codec). I said 20-25 steps per stop in my previous post because I don't want to be over-optimistic (not optimistic here would mean that there are 10-11 usable stops but those other too-noisy-to-be-useful stops eat up a big part of the color space).

I'm not sure I will want to shoot slog2 all the time. But this weekend I have been constantly needing more DR than what my 5N can offer, and fighting with chroma keys I see the issues with its codec clearer than ever (t doesn't break after grading but definitely needs a denoise pass before keying). I can't wait to be fighting banding instead of clipped highlights and codec macroblocking...

I thought IS worked with a Metabones active adapter, am I wrong?

It will work. I use a Metabones II EF to E mount adapter on my Sony FS700, and all the IS on every Canon lens works just fine.

You just cant auto focus in video mode. Autofocus is on the Mark III mode, but it ONLY works in stills mode.

I believe the point of that discussion was that the MB adapter only adds IS support to lenses that already have it, in comparison to in-body stabilization, which would have provided all lenses with IS. In-body IS would be nice if all cameras had it of course, but since the whole sensor assembly needs to be suspended in a device that can shift the sensor plane quickly and accurately enough, getting it into cameras with large sensors isn't an easy task, particularly in a compact body.

There's mechanical IBIS (what you described) and electronic IBIS (the area of the sensor that is being read changes with camera shake). Some Sony SLRs have electronic IBIS, no idea why the a7s couldn't get it too (since it's using a small crop anyway).

Sorry if this has already been covered. I have not seen it yet. So the current best solution for shooting 4k with the A7s is the Shogun. Those data rates are more hungry than my Scarlet. 2TB = 2.5 hours of footage. Thats going to get old quickly. Does anyone know if there are any type of compression options to get these data rates down upon capture rather than transcoding the footage later in post. I have shelves full of large drives...with the amount of capture I do, these data rates would just become cumbersome.

I am also a bit leery on the mandatory external recorder for 4K. It just seems like technology, that in 2 years, will be a thing of the past and very much an undesirable stage of camera history. Just my 10 cents.

That aside...I am still interested in the A7s. It looks like a really cool little camera. I am more interesting in its 1080P mode but I have not heard much talk about that let alone examples.

Does anyone have any facts about 4K compression ratios for the Shogun combination, solutions for the A7s 4K data rates, and inside on the quality of the A7s in 1080P mode vs 4K?

Thanks

Where are you getting those figures from? Apple's Prores 422 HQ 4k spec is 320Gb/hr.

Why 1080p? Don't forget Atomos doesn't use expensive proprietary media, instead ; ) And you can always give extra use to an Atomos recorder any time.

E :-)

I got it directly off the Atomos website. They state that a 2 TB drive will give you 2.5 hours of 4K ProRes recording.

Go to their site and click on the Shogun. Halfway down the page it states this. Being a primary RED shooter, I'm use to larger file sizes and work flows. What I don't like it a much larger file size than RED at 8bit. That sort of....well....sucks. Though I really do love the form factor of this little guy. Its looks awesome and the image will no doubt be great.

Though hard drives are cheap these days, I work for a label that has me shooting 3 hour events every week. I archive every clip as the footage we capture may not be used for months down the road...if not years in some cases. I also archive in redundancy. So I need two of everything. I normally buy drives in 8TBs at at time (in pairs). If this little critter is eating 2TB every 2 1/2 hours...and I capture 3+ hours a week....thats gonna be lot of storage space.

Bear in mind, I also have a crew that is also capture RED, C100, 5D3....ect...at the same events.

Please prove me wrong. I would love to be wrong about this. 320GB/hr would be totally doable. Check the Atomos site and let me know your thoughts. I may be mistaken...Atomos said 2+ hours, not 2 1/2. Either way, I could definitely use some clarification. Its definitely a make it or break it for me personally.

For Prores 422 you get UHD (which the A7s does) in 25p stated at 221Mbps. This would mean around 4hrs at 1TB.
