Rumor: Sony A7s will have 4K video

I know Den Lennie said they used the Blackmagic UltraStudio Pro to record in 4K, but that particular model is HD. The one that records 4k is the UltraStudio 4k. Maybe one of the new announcements is that they are upgrading their products to 4k across the board.

According to Den Lenie, it does do 10-bit 4K:

"The sensor reads out fully at 4k and via micro HDMI you can record 10 bit uncompressed to a 4k recorder. We used the Blackmagic Design Ultra studio Pro that records Ultra HD."

sony says the signal is 8-bit
you can record that in a 10-bit file, but you won't get more than 256 different values on each channel

3840 × 2160(30p/24p) / 1920 × 1080(60p/24p) / 1920 × 1080(60i),YCbCr 4:2:2 8bit/ RGB 8bit

even so: the sample here is internal recording only (you can see it in the BTS video; they also say they'll update their 4K video soon), shot with slog2, and I see no obvious banding ---> either slog2 is not giving you all the DR they say it's giving you, or this is VERY GOOD NEWS!!

That 1080p Scotland clip looks great. Any of you peepers spot any aliasing?
I think I'm sold on it just with the 1080p internal codec with s-log. Resolution & DR right up there. PL adaptable full frame low light pocket monster, what's not to like.

This is internal recording only. I see some flying pixels and some nasty blocky noise in the aerial shots (blocky noise: in the blue boat at 0:18), but I'd call it basically clean.

What's most surprising is that it is slog2 with 50 mbps internal 8-bit codec, and I see no banding.

We'll know as soon as someone releases 4K 8 422 External recorded footage in a high dynamic scene (daylight) or lowlight scene.

Whatever's going on, I'm pretty impressed by the Cherry Blossoms video. Better glass, IR Filtering (looks like there was mild contamination in the girls skin), and color work from the SLog2.

Not even in the YouTube video... I've spotted banding in nearly every GH4 upload as of now, and the DR difference is readily apparent.

If I was going to shoot 1080p with it I'd hook it up to a pix240i and record Prores4444 or go the cheap way uncompressed to a hyperdeck shuttle and prores batch convert. Prores422 has too many artifacts for my liking. Surely there's going to be a 4k recording option at NAB.

Anyone know if Sony plans on implementing a crop mode so that we can shoot photos and/or video at APS-C too? Would love to see this come to the camera.

1. If it's not capable of 4K internally, how was this video captured?

2. First time I've been sold on serious lowlight capabilities. That dojo material was impressive, even on YouTube.

3. Great first test footage from Sony. Simple, super detailed, and a great show of DR.

They should clarify things asap.

There is a 4k HDMI recorder that already exists, it's just not a field recorder. Blackmagic Design Hyperdeck Studio Pro is a rackmountable SSD recorder that records 4k from SDI or HDMI. It's $2k, relatively large and AC powered so it won't be ideal for most people, but seeing as all these shots are locked off static I could see them using this recorder to make the promo.

there's a crop mode for stills
and also for video, but I think it's only for the 720p120 mode

edit: no, it records 4K, 1080p and 720p in APS-C mode (even if that crop doesn't leave enough pixels for 4K --> weird)
